The Rapid slots in between the Fabia and Octavia in Skoda’s range, and measures 4390mm long, 1700mm wide, and 1470mm tall. Boot capacity is rated at 500 litres, and the Rapid will be offered with a choice of two 1.6-litre powerplants, a diesel and a petrol unit which both produces 103bhp.
Winfried Vahland, Chairman of the board of Skoda, said: “India is the first market in which we will introduce the new Rapid. It highlights the significance of that country for our company. We want to step on the pedal all over the world in the coming years. In order to do so, we will clearly increase our activities outside of Europe. In this context, the Indian market plays a central role, because, besides China and Russia, it is among the markets with the greatest potential. The new Rapid is the right car at the right time for these growth markets. It is an important step on our growth path for the coming years.”

The Rapid, which shares its name with another Skoda model from the 1980s, is based on the Indian-market only Volkswagen Vento, which is a Volkswagen Polo sedan. The Rapid will be built at Skoda’s plant in Pune, western India, as part of the Czech marque’s plans to sell 1.5 million vehicles a year globally by 2018.
