The MG3 Hybrid+ has officially arrived in the U.K., and with its unique set of qualities, looks set to give its competitors a good run for their money.
MG's commitment to offering drivers exceptional value is highlighted with the introduction of this new petrol-electric variant of its supermini. The car comes with state-of-the-art hybrid technology, yet is priced at a point that is comparable, or cheaper than many petrol superminis in the U.K. market.
The new MG3 is powered by a Hybrid+ powertrain, bringing MG performance and verve into the world of superminis. MG states that the one of the highlights here is a larger-than-average battery - with 1.83kWh worth of capacity - which helps to power a high-performance electric motor rated at about 134bhp on its own.
Thanks to the size of this battery, the MG3 Hybrid+ can travel on pure electric power in the city, helping it stand out from other hybrid superminis. As for longer journeys, MG is quick to assure that drivers can still tap on the car's 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine.
In total, the MG3 Hybrid+'s engine and electric motor put out an impressive total of 192bhp - a surprisingly large figure one doesn't typically see in superminis. Given its power, the car is able to go from 0 to 100km/h in eight seconds flat. This perkiness is carried on even into higher speed ranges, with the hatch capable of going from 80 to 110 km/h in just five seconds.
It's worth noting that the Hybrid+ powertrain doesn't require any plugging in, despite its power output. Apart from driving the car's wheels, the onboard engine also simultaneously serves as the generator for the battery - in what MG has called a "drive and charge system".
Three driving modes are also available for drivers to choose from: Eco, Standard and Sport. MG is claiming an impressive fuel consumption number of 22.7km/L. Finally, the brand also states that the car's chassis and suspension have been well tailored to U.K. roads - in line with what was done for the MG4 EV.
Two trims for the MG3 Hybrid+ are being offered at launch, with prices for the SE starting from about $31,573 ( £18,495), and the more premium Trophy priced from about $34,985 (£20,495). And similar once more to the MG4 EV, the car has been equipped with equipment designed for safety, comfort and entertainment.
As standard, both trims have been fitted with dual screen technology, which offer satellite navigation, a reversing camera, and support for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. 16-inch alloy wheels are also part of the standard equipment list.
Those who prioritise safety, however, will be delighted with the firm's offering of MG Pilot even on the SE trim. Encompassing the firm's full suite of safety assistance features, MG Pilot Safety includes Autonomous Emergency Braking and Front Collision Warning alerts, Lane Departure Warning, Emergency Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Stepping up to the Trophy, the range-topper of the MG3 Hybrid+ provides a higher level of comfort, style and convenience. More premium features included with this trim comprise a 360-degree camera, heated front seats and steering wheel, keyless entry, privacy glass, rain sensing wipers and LED projector headlights.
