Ferdinand Porsche - designer of the Porsche 911 passes on at age 76

5th April 2012 marks the passing on of one of the greatest automobile designer in history - Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. Nicknamed 'Butzi' Porsche, he was the one who brought us the iconic Porsche 911.

Many would not have imagined that the design school drop-out would come to create a car that will stand so well against the test of time. Under his belt includes another of Porsche's icon - the 904, considered as one of the most beautiful racing car, and the proudest moment of the man himself.
Alexander also went on to set up Porsche Design in 1972 during the company re-structure, a design firm which saw to the debut of his design cues on a plethora of gentlemen accessories. The credo of his design work was: "Design must be functional and functionality has to be translated visually into aesthetics, without gags that have to be explained first."
In short, his conviction to his works: "Good design should be honest." F.A. Porsche passed on in Salzburg, Austria, at the age of 76.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche is the third generation successor in the Porsche family, grandson of company founder Ferdinand Porsche. Unlike his father and grandfather who has been famous for their engineering ingenity, Alexander chose to study design, but was subsequently kicked out of school.
