OK, let's get this out of the way first. The Seat Ibiza is mechanically the same car that we reviewed in 2018 and subsequently got nominated in the Compact Hatchback category in the same year. So why is it here in this year's COTY?
This is because local distributor Vertex believes that the people who buy this Ibiza would love to have the new tech upgrades that come with this model year and have accordingly upgraded the high spec 'Style Plus' version of its supermini.
Headlining features include Adaptive Cruise Control, which is a rarity in this class. For those who don't know what this is, the system allows the car to follow traffic in front, braking and closing the gaps smoothly, allowing you to simply set your preferred following distance and speed. This is especially useful for highway driving.

Android Auto and Apple Carplay are also now standard and can be found in the 8.0-inch infotainment display that is easy to use. A much-needed Kessy Keyless Access and Start System, as well as Tiredness Recognition alert system, round up the changes.
Elsewhere, the car is as cheerful to pilot and run as before. With its spritely 112bhp turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine that allowed us to achieve a very useful 14km/L, combined with a decently sized interior, it is the perfect first car for the newbie driver. |

After winning last year's Hatchback category for our COTY selection, the Mazda 3 Hatchback is back as this year's winner. Yes. It is that impressive if you ask us.
Despite it being more than a year since the launch of the car, its newer rivals, the Seat Leon and Opel Astra is no match for the Mazda 3 Hatchback.
This is because the car is genuinely hard to fault. By now, followers of our website should know that from its sleek exterior styling and premium cabin touches to its handling and driving refinement, the new Mazda hatch impresses on all fronts.
Stand out features include its new 8.8-inch infotainment system that is so much better than its rivals in terms of graphic design and user-friendliness.
Also present in the Mazda and not in most of its other competitors is its full suite of safety features including a 360-degree reverse camera, lane departure warning system, front cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring system, and cruising and traffic assist. We must say that as more and more cars start to have such driver assists, it also becomes apparent that not Mazda's system is one of the more robust ones. |

Being a mild hybrid, the 3 Hatchback is also special in terms of powertrain. Despite having only 118bhp and 153Nm of torque, the car feels adequately brisk when navigating through traffic with the gearbox willing to kickdown as when needed.
With the hybrid system, we must point out that its engine start/stop is much smoother and less intrusive than others, bringing refinement levels up. Having thicker panels and glass windows also help keep NVH levels low.

As an entry point into BMW ownership, the 1 Series has been doing quite well on our shores. And with the all new third generation model, things are looking even better for BMW.
One of the biggest changes to this generation of the 1 Series is the switching of driven wheels from the rear to the front, breaking the tradition of BMWs almost always having their wheels rear driven. Does it really matter? Fortunately not, at least for 99% of the time.
The car is still as sweet to handle with the steering all tight and accurate, body control still also exemplary when cornering at higher speeds. It is only when the driver wants to do something naughty like donuts that you would miss the wheels being rear driven.
The other big change is that with the front-wheel drive configuration, BMW has been able to squeeze out more cabin space from the 1 Series. To be exact, the car has 33mm more legroom and 13mm more headroom. Boot space has also gone up by 20 litres to 380 litres.

Inside, the car feels even more premium than before, with a full 10.25-inch digital dashboard, the same central cluster of buttons and controls as even the 8 Series, as well as a wealth of technological functions found in its bigger brothers.
Powering this 118i is a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine producing 138bhp and 220Nm of torque. It is adequate, with the turbo providing ample thrust, allowing the car to merge onto highways without any struggle. If you need more acceleration, the quick-witted eight-speed transmission is always ready to assist.
With the new generation 1 Series, BMW has sorted out most of its predecessor's weaknesses, while also bringing a new level of usability, technology and comfort. And by a slim margin, it ekes ahead of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the other class favourite. |

You might be wondering, how does a car that's ostensibly a wagon reign supreme in the hot hatch category? Well, hear us out.
First, a hot hatch must of course be quick, and a hoot to drive. Powering the car is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that outputs 189bhp and 280Nm. This flexible unit is paired to a slick seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that allows the car to power through slower traffic easily. For those who enjoy wringing the car out, it also sounds good at the top end of its rev range without feeling breathless at all.
Despite the 125kg weight penalty and 103mm-longer wheelbase compared to the MINI Cooper S 5-Door, you are still able to take turns at ridiculous speeds in this Clubman, thanks to the generous levels of grip on offer.
When you do reach the limit of car's turning abilities, the communicative steering wheel makes sure you are aware of what it can do. The Clubman may be a wagon by name, but on the road it drives entirely like a hatchback. |

Second, a hot hatch needs to be a practical all-rounder. With a bigger sized boot than most other hatches and a good amount of room in the cabin, the Clubman makes the family a happy one. The supple-enough ride also means that your passengers will not be cursing and swearing on long journeys.
And third, a hot hatch must have a distinctive personality. The refreshed Clubman features head lights that sport redesigned LEDs, a radiator grill that now extends across the entire bumper, and new LED rear lights that has been reorganised into a Union Jack pattern. And, considering the fact that it's a relatively rare sight on our roads, that makes the Clubman just a little more special.
All things considered, the MINI Cooper S Clubman ticks all the right boxes for a hot hatch. And that makes it a deserving winner indeed. |

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS

The new 12th generation Toyota Corolla Altis sports a more contemporary styling, with sharper lines, more angular details and a greater overall sleekness. It certainly makes the older generations look dated immediately.
The same goes for the inside, with the new sweeping lines of dashboard making it more interesting. Consumers will be happy to see the car getting better quality plastics and the addition of a 7.0-inch multimedia display in the dashboard. As expected, the Altis is also spacious and has a useful 470-litre boot, plus rear air-con vents.
Built on the new Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the new Altis is notably more comfortable thanks to a very rigid body. Handling wise, the car is best described as being safe and competent. The steering also feels weightier than before, giving the car a sense of stability. |

Powering the Altis is still a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated powerplant producing a decent 129bhp and 159Nm of torque. While it may not sound like much, the Altis felt more peppy than before. During our time with it, it returned a respectable 13km/L despite not having any form of fuel-saving features like engine start/stop.
The new TNGA platform also means that the Altis is equipped with a range of safety and assistance systems. Dynamic Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning with Steering Assistant are certainly useful. And, with seven SRS airbags, vehicle stability control and a blind-spot monitoring system, the Altis also ticks all the right boxes as far as occupant safety is concerned.
Yes, the new Altis is more evolutionary than revolutionary. But considering it was already a highly capable product from the start, that means that there wasn't much fixing needed anyway. And much like its predecessors, the latest generation continues to cement itself as the class leader. |

SKODA SUPERB

Skoda is one carmaker that gives you a lot of bang for your buck. And this is no more evident than in its flagship Superb family sedan, which has been facelifted for 2020.
The exterior changes might not seem like much, but the Superb looks a tad sharper, with its redesigned bumper along with dynamic turn indicators in the rear.
Inside, the changes are more apparent, especially in the top-spec Laurin & Klement trim. Here, there's a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with five different screen styles, which complements the 9.2-inch infotainment display that we're all familiar with.
And, you get other fancy stuff in the Superb too, including wireless charging, ventilated seats, cooled compartments, and a 12-speaker Canton audio system.
All these things sound good, but where the Superb truly excels is offering a practical and comfortable space, even without equipment and features. Your rear passengers will be treated to an almost lounge-like experience with the ample legroom on offer. Practicality is also plenty, thanks to large storage spaces inside the cabin as well as the very large 625-litre boot. |

And topping it off is a drive that is incredibly comfortable, with a 2.0-litre turbocharged powerplant that delivers an ample 188bhp and 320Nm of torque to get you going.
At its price point, you'd be hard pressed to find a car that's just as big, practical and comfortable as the Skoda Superb. This excellent value-for-money proposition is what allows the Superb to rise to the top of its class. |

It doesn't take long to realise that the BMW 8 Series Coupe is a special car. The 8 Series Gran Coupe on the other hand, adds practicality to the mix without losing any of its appeal.
As the flagship model, the 8 Series Gran Coupe delivers everything that people love and want out of a grand Bimmer – sharp looks, a premium cabin, and ample amounts of driving pleasure.
It looks absolutely fantastic, with its longer, stretched out body, clean cut lines and sleek proportions. It is arguably the best-looking BMW today.
While it is undeniably high-class, high-quality and high on usability inside, the main point of the Gran Coupe is its ability to carry two extra passengers. The 200mm longer wheelbase means that passengers will have proper amounts of legroom, fitting for a grand tourer. |

The car feels fantastic on the road, too. On light loads, the 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine is quiet, refined and buttery smooth. Get on the throttle and 335bhp and 500Nm of torque is delivered quickly and effectively to the rear wheels. In its most comfortable setting, the adaptive dampers also do a good job soaking up bumps and ruts fantastically.
And while this is a big car, it doesn't feel quite so big behind the wheel. The four-wheel steering coupled with a progressive rack mean that tight car parks are a breeze, and on the go it's agile and nippy.
More than anything, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe drives and feels the way it should. It's eye-catching and long-legged and doesn't compromise on daily practicality. It is everything you want an 'everything' BMW car to be. |

MERCEDES-BENZ AMG GT 4-DOOR COUPE

Once again, the Mercedes AMG GT 4-Door Coupe comes out tops in the Performance Sedan segment.
This is effectively a four-door, five-seater version of the AMG GT, and it's clear that this is a full-on performance car. From its aggressive, muscular shoulders to the iconic Panamericana grille on its nose, it offers all the right presence expected from an AMG car.
Yet, it manages to be sensible and practical, especially when you get into its luxurious cabin. The AMG GT 4-Door is fully decked out in equipment, with two highly-customisable 12.3-inch screens that form a large widescreen cockpit. It is a visual treat for drivers and passengers alike.
As hardcore as its AMG moniker suggests, the AMG GT 4-Door manages to offer a lofty, lounge like experience inside with massage seats and ambient lighting. It also manages to still be practical. You get three seats compared to the usual two in the rear, and a sizeable 360-litre boot. |

Expectedly, this car is quick – it is an AMG after all. The 53 model is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six that sends 429bhp and 520Nm of torque to all four wheels. With this powerplant, power is almost instantaneous. Combined with its well-sorted chassis, it is a delight when you drive it enthusiastically.
Even with such tremendous power, the AMG GT 4-Door can also be calm and composed when you want it to be. Driven normally, it manages to be comfortable despite undulations and bad patches of road.
There's no doubting the AMG GT 4-Door. There's looks, power and cornering abilities. It is the perfect combination of AMG's performance DNA with the comfort abilities of Mercedes-Benz. |

The Audi RS 5 Sportback is the sort of car that is incredible on the go, yet tamed enough for the family man to enjoy driving every day – a trait that not many performance cars can offer.
It has only been a year since the appearance of the new RS 5 Sportback here in Singapore, and Audi has updated it for 2020. It continues to deliver high levels of practicality, luxury and daily usability, making it a reasonable every day performance car.
Subtle exterior changes make the RS 5 slightly more sleek looking, with a new Singleframe grille along with updated bumpers and diffusers. On the inside, the RS 5 Sportback now gets an updated 10.1-inch infotainment display, running the latest generation interface.
New sub-menus within the Audi virtual cockpit also shows the RS 5 Sportback's cheeky side – among other things, it allows you to time your 0-100km/h run (do it at your own legal peril, of course). |

Performance? The RS 5 Sportback definitely has some. With 444bhp and a neck-snapping 600Nm of twisting force coming out of its 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6, the century sprint is completed in just 3.9 seconds.
There's entertainment here too, with a sport exhaust that comes as standard for 2020. A new ‘MS' mode allows for a more aggressive shift pattern, along with a deep exhaust snarl whenever you let off the throttle.
But yet, if you turn down the fun, it is still as usable and practical as its A5 sibling - a gentle and fitting reminder that not all high-performance cars need to cause anxiety and nervousness to the driver. |

HONDA CITY

Those looking for a sensible, practical and affordable compact sedan now have plenty to look forward to with this year's segment winner, the Honda City.
On the outside, the car now has a thicker and longer nose that brings it in line with the rest of the marques' larger siblings. LED head lights also now feature on the car. The new design makes the City look more mature and upmarket.
In the cabin, the improvements are greater still. Slimmer front seats and increased proportions also deliver much more space for all passengers in the City, with legroom for those at the rear now comparable to cars a class above.
A locally-fitted 7.0-inch Display Audio system gives you Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as access to a multi-view rear-view camera. Meanwhile, you also get new air-con controls that look pretty modern, while the air-con itself is strong both at the front and rear. |

Step in and drive, and you'll find the new Honda Advanced Compatibility Engineering body that underpins the City delivering a much more composed and smooth drive. An improved suspension setup ensures that ride comfort is high, and overall noise insulation is good.
Those looking to tackle corners will find a steering that is well-weighted. The City also steers through bendy roads with composure and accuracy. And if it is sensible driving you're after, the 1.5-litre engine is smooth and easy-going, and returned a good tested fuel economy of 15.2km/L.
With a boot space of 519-litres, those looking for functionality and everyday usability will find the Honda City more than capable. Being a Honda, you can also expect good reliability and high resale values, making the City well and truly worth its asking price, and worthy of this year's award as the winner of the compact sedan segment. |

MG made a big impression upon its arrival here in Singapore thanks to the HS, enough in fact, for the car to win this year's segment.
For a start, the HS delivers on good looks, offering significant road presence with its sensuous and sharp lines.
Step inside, and not only is there plenty of space on offer, but the material quality is also far above what one would expect at the HS' asking price. An intricate collection of soft-touch plastics, suede, leather and polished metal inserts make the cabin look and feel expensive, while ambient lighting and a large panoramic roof is also offered, further adding to the lush experience.
A 463-litre boot also adds to the HS's practicality, being slightly bigger than its closest Asian competitors. |

On the road, the MG HS continues to impress, revealing itself to be a quiet and refined SUV. Noise, vibration and harshness levels are kept well at bay, while the car delivers a surprisingly pliant and gentle ride that is perfect for the daily drive.
A healthy 160bhp and 250Nm of torque from the 1.5-litre turbocharged lump also allows the HS to be pretty brisk at highway speeds and to execute overtaking manoeuvres in a breeze. The Peugeot 5008 continues to offer customers an SUV with sleek looks, generous practicality, plentiful storage and a smooth drive.
The model returns this year as a 1.2-litre variant, paired with an Aisin eight-speed gearbox that replaces the six-speeder found in the 2018 model.
The two extra cogs do well to bring added smoothness to the overall drive. Driven lightly, the engine delivers sufficient power once you get moving. The zero to 100km/h sprint is accomplished in 11.8 seconds, enough for sensible driving.
Fuel economy is also decent, with the car achieving a real-world economy of 14km/L to 15km/L.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class has received a raft of upgrades that make it a properly premium and luxurious Mercedes, as well as this year's winner for the premium compact SUV segment.
On the outside, the refreshed SUV gets new LED High-Performance head lights as standard, while the radiator grille has also been redesigned. A new rear bumper with integrated tailpipe elements, meanwhile, round off the exterior changes at the rear. Together, these changes conspire to give the GLC a rugged and tough-looking exterior.
Step inside however, and the upgrades on this facelifted model are more apparent. The new car gets the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, which pairs a 12.3-inch all-digital instrument display with a 10.25-inch touchscreen central media display. |

A new multifunction steering wheel now also gets useful Touch Control buttons, and there is also a flat and wide multifunction touchpad on the centre console that is now much easier to use than the previous generation one. Together, these changes raise the sense of quality and luxury within the GLC.
On the road, the car's new 254bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder is notably more refined, and pairs with improved compliance over bumps to deliver passengers a relaxing and measured ride. General insulation has also improved over the previous model.
Mercedes has made its compact SUV offering much more luxurious and comfortable for day-to-day use. Its new premium and luxurious touches are enough to make it a proper Mercedes-Benz, as well as our winner this year for the segment. |

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class delivers just what you'd expect out of a large SUV with a premium badge.
For a start, its design makes it one imposing car, and its greater height compared against rivals gives it the visual impression of a bigger car. If you're looking for something imposing to put on the road, this is undoubtedly it.
The interior of the GLE-Class is also designed to impress, with materials that feel and look expensive, offering a level of luxury and solidity that is expected from the brand. Taking centre place on the dashboard are the two dazzling 12.3-inch displays, operated via three touch controls on the centre console and steering wheel.
Electronically adjustable second-row seats, coupled with excellent isolation from any road and wind noise as well as vibrations, ensure that all passengers are comfortable. |

The Mercedes GLE-Class is mighty spacious as well. Folding the third row flat will offer you a sizeable 630 litres of boot space, while sliding the second row forward will get you a whopping 825 litres, with room to still carry five in comfort.
A 3.0-litre turbocharged engine pushes out a healthy 362bhp and 500Nm of torque to all four wheels, allowing you to make effortless progress despite the car's size, and is paired to a nine-speed automatic that can still deliver quick shifts during sudden kick down moments. Ride quality is equally excellent, despite the tested car coming without the AIRMATIC air suspension.
Few will ever have a true need for such a large SUV. But if it's sheer presence and making a good first impression that you're looking for, you need not look much further than this year's winner for the premium SUV segment. |

The CX-30 is among the prettiest crossovers you can get in today's new car market. Mazda's ‘KODO' Soul of Motion design language has clearly gotten many things right, from its sleek front end, to its flowing lines and athletic demeanor. Sharing the same platform and overall ethos, there's also more than a hint of the sleek and elegant Mazda3, both inside and out.
Enter the CX-30, and the first thing that hits you is simply how well everything has been put together. With generous use of soft-touch materials, excellent fit and finish as well as quality switchgear that offer a pleasing tactile feel, the interior is a premium place to be in. Opt for the Luxury trim and you'll also get to enjoy quality audio from a Bose sound system, as well as the convenience of a power adjustment driver seat.
In the powertrain department, the CX-30 is available with two different 2.0-litre engines. Despite its raised centre of gravity and higher ride profile, the CX-30 is an easy and comfortable car to drive. The well sorted suspension soaks up bumps well to offer a comfortable ride, and yet manages to keep body roll at bay when you throw it into a couple of corners. With the Luxury trim, it also comes with a whole load of safety and assistance systems.
The CX-30 delivers refinement and quality that exceeds its price tag. If you are looking for a quality crossover that offers a sleek design and comfortable drive, the CX-30 is a class leader that must be considered. |

The new one has to capture the allure of its predecessor and even better it in several other aspects, such as refinement and comfort for everyday driving.
On the exterior, Land Rover has done a great job of modernising the iconic Defender shape. While it still sports the familiar, boxy silhouette, it is also comprised of subtle curves that cleverly freshen up the design without chipping away on its toughness. Elsewhere, iconic Defender designs such as the ‘Alpine lights' roof mounted windows, short overhangs and round headlight elements have been retained.
While hardcore enthusiasts might argue that a rugged and harsh ride is part of what defines a true Defender, the increased levels of refinement and comfort in the interior will surely be welcomed by the modern day driver. Do not, however, take this as a sign that the Defender has softened. It looks athletic, the cabin is premium, spacious and high-tech, and of course, on the road its delivers road-handling prowess typically unmatched by other cars in its class.
This plug-in hybrid (PHEV) offering, the X3 xDrive30e, delivers all that, and then some. From the outside, you will be hard-pressed to tell the difference from a ‘standard' X3, except for the extra charging flap and the 30e badging.
However, get in, start the car, and it immediately feels different. On top of the ample use of blue-tinted graphics across the various digital surfaces, you'll also notice a lack of an engine sound. This is because as long as there's juice left in the battery, the car will always start in electric mode.
Set to MAX eDrive mode, the car has a real-world all-electric range of about 47km. With the first iteration introduced all the way back in 1970, the Suzuki Jimny is an off-roader with rich heritage. The decades of evolution have been distilled into a distinctive character that oozies out of the stout, boxy sheet metal with the current Jimny. When it comes to an off-road capable compact offering, there is no other car that comes right to mind.
The first thing you notice is its boxy silhouette. While most might be quick to jump on its similarities with a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, it really harks back to the Jimny's roots - look up the SJ20 Jimny and you'll see. Take a closer look and you'll notice bits and pieces inspired by the Jimnys of the yesteryears.
