SEAT Ibiza Price: POA | Distributor: Vertex Euro Motors Pte Ltd |
|
|
The Seat Ibiza may be the new kid on the block, but it's managed to fight its way to the top of the compact hatchback segment thanks to its great design, modern and comfortable cabin, as well as a punchy yet frugal powertrain.
Staying true to Ibiza's lively spirit, the car's stylish and distinctive sharp lines create a strong road presence, which allows it to stand out from the crowd. Seat is the youthful, fun arm of the Volkwagen Group and this is obvious in the exuberant styling of the Ibiza. The Ibiza isn't as stodgy as the Polo, yet has a more mature vibe compared to the Mazda2.
Inside, the Ibiza's cabin is a comfortable place to inhabit for a family of four. Its interior is also of higher quality compared to its segment rivals, thanks to the use of premium materials, as well as centre console-mounted controls that are clean and pleasingly driver-centric. And, a cargo capacity of 292 litres ensures enough space for grocery runs and bags for short holidays. |
|
More importantly, the Ibiza's punchy, turbocharged 1.0-litre lump may be small in displacement, but churns 109bhp and 200Nm of torque. It takes just 9.3 seconds to complete the century sprint and in corners, is also no slouch. Thanks to its easy and fun-to-drive nature, the Ibiza has proven itself as one of the most engaging city compacts today. Plus, it also manages to remain frugal, clocking an average fuel economy reading of 15.8km/L.
If you've just started working, begun a family or just want a compact hatch to get around, the Seat Ibiza makes a great choice. |

Ford Focus Hatchback Price: POA | Distributor: Regent Motors |
|
|
Since it was first launched in 1998, the Ford Focus has proved to be extremely popular around the globe. 2016 sees this popular hatchback receive a range of styling and interior updates, which make it one of the best cars you can buy today.
In terms of design, the Focus is muscular and sporty, thanks to a large trapezoidal grille, and a rear end that is also slightly more raked than before, giving the new Focus more angular and tapered lines. Sharper taillights also add to the car's more grown up disposition.
Inside, you'll find that the Focus' cleanly designed cabin doesn't short-change on comfort. Its front seats aren't just plush, they also hold you in place very nicely. At the rear, three passengers will find a comfortable amount of head and legroom, even for longer journeys. Centre console controls, too, are well-laid out and the cabin's ambient lightings are a nice touch. |
|
Powered by an award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, which produces 123bhp and 170Nm of torque, the Ford Focus Hatchback is more than capable on our roads, thanks to a healthy amount of torque that propels you forward.
Handling, too, is tight and assured, with the steering wheel offering a good amount of feedback, making the car easy to place on the road. The chassis also feels taut, especially when throwing the car around corners. And when you do need to quickly shed speed, the brakes feel solid and bite well.
For a sensible, yet fun-to-drive city hatchback, it's hard to top the iconic Ford Focus. |

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC not only regains the title of 'quickest and fastest' hot hatch, but is tweaked with an optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, which makes the car more dynamic than ever.
Mercedes-AMG's best improvement to the A 45's aesthetics is, without a doubt, its feistier rear apron and a new diffuser insert, which houses four vertical 'fins' and a lip. The posterior's latest enhancement gives the A 45 a more race-ready demeanour, a characteristic the outgoing model lacked.
The cabin, too, gets a few Mercedes-AMG extras, such as Alcantara inlets on the Recaro sports seats, as well as red inner trim and stiching throughout the cabin. While the presence of 'AMG' badging certainly speaks to its fiery intentions, the cabin can comfortably fit four, with more headroom than you might expect. |
|
The A 45 now makes a maniacal 381bhp and 475Nm of wrenching force from a rorty 2.0-litre force-fed engine - a point the car makes clear as soon as you slam your right foot down. This super hot hatch gets from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds, 0.4 seconds quicker than before and 0.1 seconds faster than its closest rival, the Audi RS3.This new-found glory is the result of a reconfigured valve assembly, adjustments to timing, more barbaric turbocharging, revised gear ratios and improved aerodynamics.
Its ludicrous quickness isn't merely just a party trick, though. The A 45 is a complete, dynamic package. The car reacts swiftly to driver inputs, and changes directions at dangerously fast speeds without much drama. Additionally, the all-wheel drive system also means that you never feel short of grip.
For brutal yet usable performance, as well as the fastest and most powerful hot hatch in the world, there is little reason to not want a Mercedes-AMG A 45. |

MINI Cooper Clubman Price: POA | Distributor: Eurokars Habitat |
|
|
The new MINI Cooper Clubman touts a heavy dose of good, conventional sensibility, thanks to greater legroom, a bigger boot and better overall usability.
The Clubman retains much of its sporty, stretched silhouette, long roof line, steep rear and classic design features, while instead of the old car's bi-parting side doors, you now get four proper doors for ease of ingress.
Inside, it's recognisably classic MINI, although the brand has bumped up the quality of the materials a notch. Seats, as before, are extremely comfortable and the sides provide just the right amount of support. And, more importantly, the largest representative of the new MINI generation has great baggage holding capacity. Boot space in the Clubman is a nice 360 litres with the rear bench up and 1,250 litres with them down. In this segment, no one blends form and function nearly as well as the Clubman. |
|
But, it is on the road that the Clubman really sets itself apart. Its punchy engine variants, paired to a well-sorted six-speed automatics, prove to be one of the most enjoyable, incredibly soulful powertrains in the market today.
The car also has an incredible chuckability that is almost appalling for something of its size and stature. Despite its conventional four doors and estate proportions, the Clubman has an uncanny ability to thrill on the roads, especially in Cooper S guise.
The Clubman ticks all the sensible, practical boxes, offering generous amounts of space, a luxurious and comfortable interior and every bit of the quirky charm of past MINIs, making it a definite winner in its class. |

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Price: POA | Distributor: Eurokars Auto |
|
|
If you want a handsome, powerful, premium and very practical executive sedan, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is your answer.
The 4 Series Gran Coupe combines the practicality of the four-door 3 Series with the dynamic appeal of the two-door 4 Series. Compared to its rivals, this all-rounder cuts a much classier, eye-catching silhouette. Its long, gently sloping roof line, flat window graphics and expressive lines converge in an extremely muscular rear.
In the cabin, a similar dash layout to the 3 Series means that the 4 Series Gran Coupe is hard to fault, both in terms of material choices and ergonomics. BMW's extremely easy-to-use proprietary infotainment system, iDrive, is displayed via a screen that sits on top of the dash, meaning that you are always able to keep half an eye on the road while operating it.
Boot space is generous at 480-litres with the rear bench up, while passengers in front enjoy large door bins, central stowage and a decent-sized glovebox, all providing sufficient storage for everyday items. |
|
The thrill of driving has always been one of the main reasons for choosing a BMW, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe does not disappoint. In fact, it's one of the main reasons that this BMW tops its segment.
Like the rest in BMW's stable, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is blessed with a series of potent and refined powertrains. But more importantly, it's polite and well-behaved if you drive in a gentlemanly manner, and a ton of fun when you get a little frisky. Thus, it doesn't really matter if you choose to drive the car around town or on the highways - the Bimmer will be able to dish out whatever you require it to, which makes this car that much more admirable than its peers. |

Honda Civic Price: POA | Distributor: Kah Motor |
|
|
The newest iteration of one of the most popular cars in the world, the Honda Civic, did not disappoint eager petrol heads and die hard fans when it was launched in Singapore on 8th August.
In its 10th generation, the Honda Civic is easily one of Singapore's most well-loved sedans.
Available either as the more traditional 1.6 iVTEC or much-lauded powerful, new 1.5 VTEC Turbo, both cars are blessed with great road-handling characteristics that the Civic is renowned for - sharp, precise and composed around twisting tarmac, while being supportive and steady over inner city road bumps.
Both also come with Honda's Earth Dreams Continuously Variable Transmission, which was created to improve fuel economy by eliminating the need for gear changes.
And whether you're a fan of the CVT or not, it's hard to ignore the new Civic's sportier and more advanced body design, which uses the 'Wide and Low' body styling concept to enhance the sense of 'sport'. |
|
The drive and performance aside, there are also enough creature comforts to keep the whole family happy. These include dual zone automatic climate control with rear ventilation outlets, USB/HDMI ports to hook your smartphone up to, a 7.0-inch infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay.
All of this pizzazz doesn't come without a dose of practicality. The cabin of the new Civic is more spacious, has segment-leading visibility and an increase in trunk space over the model it precedes. The designers at Honda even went to the trouble of devising a 60:40 split and folding rear seat, which gives users more convenience and functional space.
It's not a wonder then that the new Honda Civic has risen from the ashes to become the most popular, sought after, and applauded at four-door sedan available to buy. |

Mitsubishi Attrage Price: POA | Distributor: Cycle & Carriage Mitsubishi |
|
|
Winner of last year's Compact Sedan of the Year title, Mitsubishi's small sedan continues to rule as the number one little city car that's big on doing what it does well.
Born in an era of engine downsizing, this fuel-efficient 1.2-litre sedan continues to win hearts and minds. Easy to drive, functional, inexpensive to buy and frugal to run, the Attrage has revolutionised the compact car segment with its outstanding fuel economy and cheap running costs.
Measuring 4,245mm x 1,670mm x 1,515mm (L x W x H), the Attrage is bigger and more practical than its hatchback sibling (not available in Singapore) but smaller than most of its other rivals in the market.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Attrage's cabin is surprisingly spacious thanks to its long wheelbase of 2,550mm. This translates to a generous amount of leg and headroom in the back for three adults. Plus, its 450-litre trunk is capable of swallowing a pram, child's seat, foldable bicycles, and golf or grocery bags depending on the type of lifestyle of its driver. |
|
Mitsubishi's designers have also successfully eliminated the hatchback-to-sedan stigma by giving the Attrage a swooping roofline and sporty stance. In addition to that, its sharp-looking head lights make it look mature and sophisticated.
The Attrage's CVT gearbox accentuates its naturally aspirated engine's willingness to help pedal the 905kg car along at a respectable pace. Its low weight and small engine also mean this car won't need too many stops at the petrol kiosk.
Ticking all the right boxes for a practical compact sedan, you and the family can rest assured that the Attrage is the best in its class. More importantly, for a city car that's always caught in stop-start traffic, the Attrage's frugal fuel economy has certainly gone a long way. |

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon 2016 Price: POA | Distributor: Cycle & Carriage Industries |
|
|
The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a technological juggernaut dressed in a very well-tailored suit. At first glance the car's sheet metal will look familiar because it resembles the bigger S-Class limo.
As expected, the new E-Class front end falls in line with Mercedes' current design language, thanks to familiar styling cues such as elongated head lights and an upright grille.
The E-Class also boast a long hood, muscular haunches, and a coupe-like silhouette. The sleek, flowing lines at the side of the car culminate in an unmistakable rear end, which is both curvy yet muscular.
From the metal-weave trim to the 64-colour ambient lighting system and optional Burmester surround sound system, there is no denying that the E-Class is a plush and premium place to be in.
Things get even better for the driver with a widescreen cockpit, made up of two high-resolution 12.3-inch displays housed under a shared glass cover, taking centre stage. |
|
By using the Touch-Control buttons on the steering wheel, you won't need to press any of the other buttons in the cabin, with the exception of the ignition button. Touted as a world's first in the industry, it responds to horizontal and vertical swipes exactly like a smartphone or tablet would.
Under the hood, the 2.0-litre engine is certainly usable and practical, making it easy to drive. And with 300Nm of torque at your disposal, you won't feel underwhelmed when you decide to put the pedal to the metal.
The E-Class simply glides over most road imperfections and is easily one of the most comfortable in its class, thanks to a near perfect setup of air suspension combined with adaptive damping adjustment.
With its high level of equipment, refinement, faultless build quality and impressive interior, the E-Class has demonstrated that it promises a sizeable step in luxury. |

Voted yet again as Family Sedan of the Year, Mazda's facelifted third generation 6 has done it again. First unveiled at the 2012 Moscow Motor Show, the 6 became one of the best-looking Mazdas ever made.
Excelling in aesthetics has always been one of Mazda's strong points. Creating cars that communicate with drivers on an emotional level never fail to drive up showroom traffic and sales. Produced by the Japanese marque since 2002, the Mazda6 has since sold over a million units worldwide.
This elegant family sedan could easily pass off as a Continental offering. The bold lines on its long hood pronounced front wheel arches as well as aggressive face add up to make this 6 an attractive and handsome car.
A curvaceous dashboard with vast plains of soft touch materials greets you as you slide into the driver's seat. The controls and buttons are laid out in a well-thought-out manner. Even the multi-functional leather-wrapped steering wheel feels intuitive and familiar. |
|
Close your eyes and feel your way around the cabin and leather trim in places like the centre console and door panels trick you into thinking you are in a German-made car. Kudos goes to Mazda's designers for paying such careful attention to every inch of the inside of the car.
Measuring in at 4,864mm x 1,840mm x 1,450mm (L x W x H), the Mazda6 is even longer than the Lexus GS. This translates to more drama when the car is swallowing distances on the road. Drama aside, its generous wheelbase of 2,830mm means that there is enough space for the whole family, with an impressive 438-litre luggage capacity to boot. |

BMW 7 Series Price: POA | Distributor: Performance Motors |
|
|
You're looking at one of, if not, the most advanced and luxurious limo on Singapore roads today - the unmistakable BMW 7 Series.
Viewed from any angle, BMW's latest 7 Series has a powerful, eye-catching appearance. Its majestic proportions are amplified by its tastefully crafted, outward-curving sheet metal.
One of many highlights, the new 7 Series uses Carbon Core technology in its body structure. This technology was used in the development of the revolutionary BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.
This makes the 7 Series the first car in its segment in which industrially manufactured Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic or CFRP, is combined with steel and aluminium. This innovative combination reduces vehicle weight and increases the strength and rigidity of the passenger cell for added safety.
Packed with BMW technology, the 7 Series boasts Executive Drive Pro active chassis system, the Driving Experience Control switch with Adaptive mode and BMW Laserlight.
The 7 Series gets three engine variants here. The smallest engine is found in the 730i, which has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The 740Li features a 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbocharged motor while the 750Li sports a heart-pounding V8 TwinPower Turbocharged powerplant under its bonnet. |
|
Aside from the car's brilliant performance, passengers who occupy the luxurious seats in the rear can enjoy a high degree of comfort, thanks to maximised legroom and massage functions that offer a total of eight programmes.
But at the heart of this is the BMW Touch Command tablet, a removable handheld device that is integrated in the centre armrest between the rear seats of the car. With this tablet, passengers can operate the rear seats' massage functions, set the lighting ambience and other entertainment functions.
With such a dizzying amount of technology and luxury available in the 7 Series, BMW has gifted us with a slice of motoring heaven. |

The new Sportage has a distinct European feel from the B-pillar onwards, which isn't surprising seeing as current Chief Designer Peter Schreyer, who used to be at Audi, designed it. The Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is bigger than its predecessors, it is 40mm longer and 20mm taller but retains its width.
The Sportage's larger dimensions allow for more space in the interior, which makes for a spacious and airy cabin. Comfort and refinement fill the Sportage's interior, with soft seats and premium materials littered throughout the cabin.
An extra 30mm in the SUV's wheelbase is the most noticeable in the rear, where passengers get to enjoy increased legroom, plus a USB and 12V port for charging their electronics.
Cabin refinement has been vastly improved to reduce noise, vibration and harshness; with added dashboard insulation, new acoustic shields fitted to the engine and more sound-absorbent materials throughout the wheel arches. This makes road noise significantly less noticeable, and engine noise quiet. |
|
Boot space has also increased. The Kia Sportage now has a 503-litre boot, up from 465 litres. This comes with a wider luggage area and lowered load lip for more accessibility to 'junk in the trunk'.
Contrary to the stereotype of big SUVs being cumbersome to handle, the Sportage is surprisingly obedient and a joy to drive. Steering is light and contradictory of the car's size, which makes it easy to handle around town. The SUV's 2.0-litre engine, which produces 153bhp and 192Nm of torque, is mated to a smooth, six-speed automatic transmission.
Modifications have been made to the suspension to improve the Sportage's ride quality and handling agility. It soaks up bumps on the road well and makes for a really comfortable and pleasant drive.
The latest iteration of the Kia Sportage is packed with equipment usually present in cars above its price point. This, coupled with its comfortable and spacious interior, reserves the Sportage a well-deserved spot among the top picks in this category. |

Volvo XC90 Price: $293,000 - $373,000 | Distributor: Wearnes Automotive |
|
|
With the new XC90, Volvo carries on its legacy of delivering an assertive and imposing premium Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with state-of-the-art safety technologies and superb interior quality. The XC90 has been praised for its build quality and family-friendly design and it comes as no surprise that it is one of Volvo's best-selling models.
The SUV's more assertive styling, with its larger grille, aggressive lower air intakes and slimmer head lights fitted with 'Thor's Hammer' LED daytime running lights, is a significant upgrade from its predecessor's yet it manages to retain its identity as a Volvo. Standard styling options include silver roof rails and twin chrome tailpipes.
Equipped with Volvo's full range of safety systems as standard options and a sturdy structure, the XC90 is arguably one of the safest SUVs in the market today.
Beneath its stately guise, the XC90 has the ability to seat seven people in luxurious comfort. The third row is capable of accommodating two smaller-sized Asian passengers and has been moved inwards for a theatre-style seating arrangement, which allows its occupants to see past the second row. |
|
Volvo's incredibly comfortable seats come with leather upholstery as standard. The XC90's front seats also come with extendable thigh cushions to provide extra support for taller drivers.
Road, engine and wind noise are kept to a minimum in the XC90's cabin, even with heavy wind and rain; allowing for conversations within the human decibel range.
Complementing the SUV's looks is a responsive powertrain more than capable of hauling the entire family, as well a commanding road presence that inspires confidence.
The T6 R-Design's twin-charged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which puts out 320bhp and 400Nm of torque, has got plenty of grunt that is best enjoyed on long straights while the T5's 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, putting out 254bhp and 320Nm of torque, feels quiet and refined at cruising speed.
Volvo's reputation for safety and luxury shine through in the XC90. This coupled with updated styling and plenty of features as standard take the car to the top spot in the Premium SUV category. |

Jaguar F-PACE Price: $238,888 - $458,888 (w/o COE) | Distributor: Wearnes Automotive |
|
|
Jaguar took the F-TYPE, gave it a dose of practicality, and out came the F-PACE. Its sleek lines, aggressive front end and sloping coupe-like roofline are simply a sight to behold. Jaguar has embraced its sporty purity through the F-PACE's squat dimensions and mean demeanour, in a segment often filled with bland and practical designs.
A premium and spacious cabin allow for ample passenger legroom and the panoramic glass roof adds a sense of airy spaciousness to the F-PACE. It also boasts the practicality of a family Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), with a 650-litre boot that can be expanded to 1,740 litres with the rear seats folded flat.
Premium quality is evident inside the F-PACE, with high-quality materials lathered throughout the well-built and comfortable interior. Rear seats in the F-PACE have the ability to be electrically reclined for maximum comfort. Also, its gesture tailgate has a relocated sensor, which has been moved to both corners of the rear bumper. This means you don't have to dodge the boot lid every time you close it. |
|
The sporty character synonymous with the Jaguar name holds true with the F-PACE as well, with its sweet supercharged V6 engine, dynamic handling and sonorous exhaust note. The British SUV's supercharged 3.0-litre V6, with a power output of 335bhp and 450Nm of torque, chews up Singapore's tarmac with ease despite its 1,802kg weight.
Corners are where the British marque's engineering really shine. The F-PACE's suspension plants the car firmly to the ground with negligible body roll and soaks up bumps in the road well despite its firm ride quality.
Performance aside, the F-PACE is perfectly capable of being tame. It's not exactly the quietest car, with the whine of its supercharger and steady exhaust growl in the background, but it is able to haul the family comfortably along for a trip to the mall. |

The Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG promises a sportier choice for buyers in the market for a luxury Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with provocative styling and enough muscle to destroy almost anything in its wake. The loud and proud design statement of this performance SUV is a marriage of a coupe's sporty delineation and an SUV's commanding road presence.
If you're looking to turn heads, the GLE450 AMG's bubble-shaped flowing side contours, large wheel arches and elongated greenhouse will definitely get you noticed. Gaping air intakes, aggressive 21-inch wheels and a 1,700mm height are constant reminders that occupants are riding in a sports, not an off-road, car. Many of Mercedes' quality elements can be found within the coupe's cabin, including AMG's sports seats in the front and three-spoke sports steering wheel wrapped in black Nappa leather.
The car's Bi-Turbocharged V6 puts out 362bhp and 520Nm of torque to all four wheels, pulling it way ahead of its competition and into the top spot for this year's performance SUV category. It is also a docile tarmac-gobbler, with plenty of low to mid range torque from its V6 engine for easy city commuting. |
|
Mercedes' nine-speed automatic transmission is paired to the monstrous V6 engine and switches from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde, depending on the mode set by the 'Dynamic Select' controller, which also dictates the SUV's steering weight, suspension and throttle response. Modes available on the 'Dynamic Select' controller are - Individual, Sport Plus, Sport, Comfort and Slippery.
Sport and Sport Plus modes on the coupe SUV smoothen out its gearshifts and turn up its aggressiveness, with a more weighted steering and firmer suspension. It sticks to the ground upon acceleration and steers decisively. We recommend leaving it in Sport Plus mode, which turns the exhaust into a seductive backfiring machine, in addition to the performance boosts. |

Volkswagen Golf SV Price: $109,400 - $133,400 | Distributor: Volkswagen Group Singapore |

|
For the young burgeoning family leading an active lifestyle, we reckon the Volkswagen Sportsvan is the ideal car.
With its sharp edges and prominent creases along the flanks, it is not the most sleek looking car around but it looks sharp enough to feel at home no matter at a country club or the nearby supermarket.
Despite its higher roofline as compared to the Golf, the extra 83mm in length means the Sportsvan does not look as clumsy as most MPVs do. It is also 8mm wider too, translating to more space inside.
On the topic of space, with its 48mm longer wheelbase compared to the Golf, there is more legroom rear passengers. Need more boot space? The rear seats can be moved 180mm forwards to create more room in the 500-litre boot, or backwards so that those in the rear can stretch out.
The high-quality cabin is also tastefully decked out in soft-touch materials, edged with slithers of aluminium and piano black inserts. |
|
On the go, the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine is quiet and strong, delivering enough torque to make the car feel punchy in every gear. Using the smooth-shifting seven-speed DSG gearbox, it allows the Sportsvan to merge effortless highway cruising with decent accelerative urge. Road and wind noise is kept to a minimum, making for a relaxing drive.
For those that worry that the Sportsvan's plus-size body may translate to a cumbersome drive, those fears are unfounded. Sharing much of its running gear with the Golf, the Sportsvan drives exactly like its smaller sibling, thanks to the standard-fit sports suspension. |

The Honda Stream was one of the most popular Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPV) back in its heyday and judging from what our voters think, its replacement - the Jade RS - is set to be as successful as its predecessor.
Continuing to look as sporty its predecessor, it is fronted by Honda's 'Solid Wing Face' design identity, which fuses a spindle-shaped, mesh-type front grate with a pair of LED headlamps. At the rear, sporty rear combination lamps indicate a sense of unity to the rear windows through a flowing design.
Inside, the sporty theme continues, with its two-tiered dash recalling the FD Civic. Meanwhile, sensibly placed controls prove that Honda hasn't lost its knack for ergonomics.
Nowadays, smart infotainment systems are the norm and the Jade RS doesn't disappoint. It comes with a 7.0-inch high-definition capacitive media interface, which renders intuitive control at your fingertips.
Unlike most MPVs in its class, the Jade RS has a clever 'V-slide captain's seats' where the middle row seats slide back and forth in a V-shaped line to create more space - move the seats back and they join to give you a comfortable, frontal view. |
|
Being a Honda, one expects the MPV to be adept in the power and handling department. While old Honda purists may scorn at the thought of turbocharging, we are happy to report that this new turbocharged 1.5-litre, four-cylinder plant produces 148bhp and 203Nm of torque, sending the Jade RS from 0-100km/h in brisk 9.5 seconds.
On the go, the Jade RS actually accelerates with more oomph than the modest paper figures may suggest. Paired to a CVT, the linearity of power delivery means that you'd likely forget that the car packs a turbo. Around corners, it behaves more like a hatch than MPV, thanks to the car's Agile Handling electric aid that utilises brake vectoring to improve corner traceability.
With its combination of good looks, daily practicality, easy drivability and surprising agility, the Honda Jade RS is the standout MPV of the year. |

Porsche purists purr wistfully about the venerable 911, touting it as the greatest sports car ever made, with its pure driving sensation, sublime style, and the kooky placement of the engine behind the rear axle that the company has somehow made work.
More than 50 years since the very first 911 was produced, this newest, latest model may be the most controversial yet, for one very simple reason - turbocharging. While turbocharging has been featured on Porsche's higher-performance models before, this is the first time that forced induction engines are found on base models.
Turbocharging has no doubt altered some elements of the fabled 911's driving sensation. Most notably, the screaming roar of the flat-six Boxer engine is now replaced by a slightly more subdued soundtrack. However, what the German marque has done is make the sheer performance of the 911 that much more accessible. |
|
This improved accessbility also means it's easier for drivers to exploit the car's immense handling prowess. Because you don't have to concern yourself so much with working the engine hard, it's easier to appreciate the 911's cornering stability and balance.
A new powertrain aside, the car retains its iconic good looks, premium interior and quality driving experience. And, even as this monumental wind of change passes, the end result is something entirely familiar. The 911 Carrera is still a supreme driving machine - an iconic sports car.
Porsche, not for the first time in its history, took something 'wrong' and somehow made it right. The brand continues to defy expectations and prove cycnics wrong, setting a clear benchmark for performance cars. It's for reasons as such that the Porsche 911 Carrera is our best coupe this year. |

Mazda MX-5 Price: POA | Distributor: Trans Eurokars (Mazda) |
|
|
Convertibles offer one of the simplest joys in life – driving along with the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. And, no car better encapsulates that than the Mazda MX-5.
The world's most loved and best-selling roadster of all time, the fourth generation MX-5 continues to deliver the ultimate roadster experience. Its aggressive new styling may take a little time to get used to, but its no doubt eye-catching and attention-grabbing.
Its interior may be on the barer side compared to most modern cars, but it still marks an improvement in both comfort, quality and technology. Materials are pleasant, controls are ergonomically arranged, and modern touches like a Bose sound system integrated into the headrests make this car entirely easy to live with. |
|
In fact, it's the overall back-to-basics characteristic of the car, which allows you to focus on the most important thing - driving. And, this is where the MX-5 absolutely shines. The driving experience is of the purest sort thanks to a perky naturally aspirated engine, a well-sorted suspension setup that balances comfort and handling, and a responsive steering rack that's one of the best we have experienced.
Driving the MX-5 will put a smile on your face; a smile that will only continue to grow. The car is huge fun in a small package, a reminder of the joy of driving. It is the sort of car that every driver should experience at least once in their lives. That alone is a remarkable achievement for the Mazda MX-5. |

Porsche 718 Boxster Price: $304,888 - $474,488 (w/o COE) | Distributor: Porsche Singapore |
|
|
As far as premium convertibles go, it's hard to look past the Porsche Boxster. Often decried as a poor man's 911, the Boxster has in recent times, come into its own.
Fully embracing the open-top experience, the Boxster is designed around a mid-engine, roadster platform. Porsche's latest iteration, the 718 Boxster takes a monumental step forward by dropping two-cylinders and adding forced induction. Firing out 350bhp and 420Nm of torque, the 718 Boxster's century sprint timing of 4.2 seconds is almost a full second faster than its predecessor.
Apart from being lightning-quick, the 718 Boxster also impresses with its overall driving experience. Its PDK transmission provides seamless shifts, its ride is more refined than before, and its sharp, yet balanced dynamics mean that daily driving is an effortless joy. The 718 Boxster can certainly hold its own on a track, but with the top down, it really excels as a city cruiser. |
|
The car has got the styling to match, too. With a sharper, keener design language, the 718 Boxster cuts an arresting figure on the road. And, on the inside, you'll find a faultless interior that's sublimely well-equipped, comfortable and practical.
The 718 Boxster's clear signs of progress, confidence and immense performance capabilities make it the best premium convertible this year. It may not offer the same sharpness as the 911, but it never professed to do so. The 718 Boxster has an admirable personality of its own, while still retaining its confidence as a purebred Porsche sports car. |

Honda HR-V Price: $102,999 - $132,999 | Distributor: Kah Motor |
|
|
Our Car of the Year in 2015, the Honda HR-V continues to dominate our roads. And this year's facelifted version brings more good news - it is now the Japan-made model.
Style-wise, the HR-V is still a bold-looking crossover with great visual appeal. The HR-V retains its sloping roofline, which creates a coupe-like silhouette, helping it look pleasingly compact. The facelift brings with it LED head lights, as well as body-coloured bumpers, wheel arches and chrome roof rails as standard.
Much of the HR-V's popularity stems from the way it manages something of a magic trick - for a crossover that is visually small, it actually opens up to a surprisingly spacious cabin that's high on utility. |
|
But, the HR-V's biggest change lies under the bonnet. Unlike the Thailand-made HR-V of 2015, which was equipped with a SOHC engine, Kah Motor has decided to up the ante for its replacement, and this facelifted HR-V now gets a 1.5-litre DOHC engine that is more powerful and more economical. Managing an extra 10bhp and 10Nm of torque, the drive is now more responsive and energetic.
Last year, we said, “If you're looking for a car that looks sexy standing still, practical with good fuel economy and has a cabin comfortable enough for five adults, look no further - the HR-V is the do-it-all car.” Nothing's changed. The facelifted HR-V, as affordable as it continues to be, is still very much the quintessential do-it-all car in Singapore, and its prevalence on our roads is a testament to that. |

Subaru Levorg Price: $131,800 - $143,800 | Distributor: Motor Image Enterprises |
|
|
Stationwagons appear to be in vogue lately, with several brands bringing in their respective stationwagon offerings in the past year. Arguably the most notable of them all is the Subaru Levorg – once very well-known for its wagons, the new Levorg seeks to rekindle a particular love affair with the wagon, specifically the fourth generation Subaru Legacy GT wagon.
There is a visual familiarity to the Levorg. Everything from the B-pillar forwards is borrowed from Subaru's performance hero, the WRX. But the nicely proportioned rump at the back helps the Levorg stand apart, while adding to the appeal of its design.
The interior boasts excellent build quality, with every panel feeling like it has been fitted with care. The relaxed electric front leather seat design is also both purposeful and comfortable. In the Levorg, Subaru has also managed the neat trick of packing the space of the bigger Legacy into a smaller overall footprint, so the packaging is tidy, with plenty of passenger and luggage space. |
|
The Levorg continues to impress on the road. The 1.6-litre turbocharged engine is a refined unit, delivering power in a linear fashion across the rev range. This offers good flexibility between cruising around town and overtaking on the highway.
Sharing a platform with the WRX, the wagon's sporting genes become more evident in corners. For an estate, it handles remarkably well, always remaining composed and stable. Thanks to Subaru's famed Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the Levorg also encourages you to push a little harder with strong grip and traction.
Closely matching the WRX in terms of dynamic character, but boasting greater practicality and a more distinct aesthetic, the Subaru Levorg is the perfect reflection of Subaru's wagon-making capabilities. |

Audi A6 Avant Price: POA | Distributor: Premium Automobiles |
|
|
You could make the case that no one designs stationwagons quite like Audi. After all, the Avant is the carmaker's signature bodystyle. And, when it comes to executive stationwagons, the Audi A6 Avant makes a strong, bold case to be the very best this year.
As part of its mid-cycle refresh, the A6 Avant sports more refined lines on its sheet metal, along with a restyled front, to give it a sharper and bolder disposition. At the same time, the A6 Avant retains the brand's distinctive wagon proportions, with its distinctive rear end and flowing lines, and we reckon the Avant looks better than its sedan counterpart.
The elegant design continues into the spacious and high-quality interior, outfitted with materials that are soft to the touch. The high-grade interior has also been improved - the MMI system has been updated for more intuitive operation, including a marked improvement in its voice-recognition capabilities. This overall user-friendliness adds to the grown-up, practical and functional sensibilities of this car. |
|
Under the hood, the engine may be down on displacement from before. While it used to have a 2.0-litre engine, it now sports a 1.8-litre unit that offers an additional 10bhp more. The refined and punchy unit makes for an easy drive, with the acceleration being particularly smooth. And, every journey will be an unfettered one. With a cultured right foot, the driving experience is serene, comfortable and faultless. Credit for this also goes to the new seven-speed transmission, which works quietly in the background.
The Audi A6 Avant continues to be a sensible and high-quality proposition, offering comfort, practicality, space and refinement in spades. The updated drivetrain means the car is more efficient than before, making it more practical for growing families as well. |

Honda Civic Price: POA | Distributor: Kah Motor |
|
|
Like a phoenix rising out of the ashes, the latest generation Civic has made its way back into the good graces of lovers of the sporty four-door sedan after the 2011 version fell short of expectations. The latest one, however, has got families, newlyweds, singles, retirees and first-time car buyers hot under the collars dying to take one out for a test drive.
Could all this fanfare be attributed to the Civic's latest head-turning looks? A combination of sleek bodylines and a sharp face all sitting closer and wider to the ground create an unmistakable yet modern Civic design aesthetic. It also has a longer wheelbase and longer hood, as well as 20-inch wheels, lower air intakes and new LED head lights.
On the inside, the interior offers a sense of spaciousness and premium comfort, whilst modern-day features include remote engine start, smart entry and push start button, electronic parking brake, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Besides its sportier look, this is the first Honda Civic to offer its new VTEC turbo engine. Alongside the 1.6-litre powerplant carried over from the previous generation, the latest Civic also gets an all new turbocharged petrol engines, a 1.5-litre DOHC VTEC Turbo. The new turbocharged engine forms part of Honda's growing Earth Dreams Technology range and delivers a combination of dynamic performance, class-leading output and excellent fuel economy. |
|
The launch of the brand new 10th generation 2016 Honda Civic came amidst much hoopla and hype, but it's fair to say the car has far exceeded expectations – its combination of good looks, a practical and comfortable cabin, an enticing new powertrain as well as its cursory confident handling make it a sublimely well-rounded package.
With a steady increasing number of new Civics on our roads, it's clear that this new car is the success Honda needs it to be, especially after the underwhelming ninth generation model. The Japanese marque has brought its A-game to retake its crown in an increasingly diverse and competitive market, and claims this year's Sgcarmart Car of the Year award. |
