Volkswagen unveils L1 diesel electric hybrid concept car at Frankfurt

Specifically, the L1 uses 1.38 litres of diesel per 100km, and is inspired by Volkswagen's original 1-litre concept car that was first shown back in April 2002. The odd, cigar-shaped L1 has an extremely aerodynamic body and a drag co-efficient figure of just 0.195.
At 3813mm long, the L1 is as long as a Volkswagen Polo, but the 1143mm height is the same as a Lamborghini Murcielago, and at 1200mm wide, it is narrower than any car available on the market today. Extensive use of aluminium and carbon fibre means that the L1 weighs just 380kg.
The L1 concept has space for two passengers, with the passenger sitting directly behind the driver. Entry is via an electronically-operated canopy that is hinged at the side and opens upwards.
The L1 is powered by a 0.8 litre engine that is based on the 1.6 litre TDi unit found in the Golf BlueMotion. This is mated to an electric motor that has 14bhp and can either take over the diesel engine at low speeds, or offer extra power when additional acceleration is needed.
Volkswagen claims that the L1 concept can go from 0-100km/h in 14.3 seconds, and reach a top speed of 160km/h. Despite the small 10-litre fuel tank, the L1 can theoretically cover a distance of 725km between refuelling, thanks to its low fuel consumption.
