This is Rolls-Royce's latest creation: A chess set

It's not just the world's most luxurious cars that Rolls-Royce seems keen on putting its mark on these days. Its latest party piece? Possibly the finest-made chess set to ever to be made.
Following a full year of design, engineering and experimentation, Goodwood's latest creation - simply named the 'Chess Set' - was born out of an observation that its clients enjoy chess (at a very high level too), and is meant to embody "the sense of hosting and occasion that defines the Rolls-Royce experience".
The brand's iconic hallmarks are all there on first glance. Rolls-Royce states that each set is meticulously crafted by hand (duh), with the board's aluminium board first milled by machine, then refined by hand so that the corners are more precisely defined. You'll also find the Spirit of Ecstasy emblem affixed to the front and back of the set to make its provenance extra clear.
But in typical Rolls-Royce fashion, the Chess Set takes its attention to detail to an extreme that the naked eye may not immediately catch.
For starters, the veneer pieces used on the board are crafted from the same log, so that a consistent pattern in the natural grain is achieved. (This apparently also ensures that the wood will age uniformly over time.) The same sorts of materials that adorn the interiors of the marque's cars are also incorporated into the chess set, with a choice of four veneer combinations availed to Rolls-Royce's clientele.
Beyond just experimenting with materials used to design the chess set, the design team also tinkered around with six different types of magnets before arriving at the final one - in order to find one boasting the optimal strength to secure the chess pieces, yet also also allow them to "float effortlessly" across the board.
Said chess pieces are also made of ceramic-coated aluminium and crowned with a stainless-steel head meant to remind one of jewels - as well as of the solid-metal organ stops found in the brand's cars. While the black pieces are finished in satin, the white ones are subtly iridescent.
The Chess Set's coolest party trick, however, is its ability to open in a "smooth, single theatrical motion" - following which a leather-lined holder elevates and presents the chess pieces. This movement is meant to mimic the automated opening of the rear-hinged coach doors on all of Rolls-Royce's cars. Neatly tucked into the board as well are two hidden drawers on each side containing an additional queen.
Unfortunately (but unsurprisingly), Rolls-Royce isn't giving just anyone the chance to own a piece of its brand; the Chess Set will only be available for commission in Rolls-Royce showrooms and Private Office boutiques.
