Skoda's flagship model, the Superb, is fully entering its latest generation with the release of the all new Superb Estate. The Estate's release follows in the footsteps of the unveiling of the all new Skoda Superb late last year. The liftback sedan has since already entered production.
The Superb Estate is said to be Skoda's most dynamic estate car to date. And like its twin, the vehicle comes with increased dimensions, an evolved look and new technologies.
The exterior of the Superb Estate can easily be distinguished by its octagonal radiator grille and LED Matrix beam headlights, which feature the new Crystallinium design element. While Skoda says that this has been integrated thoroughly throughout the car, you'll find that it's most apparent in the slimmed-down LED taillights and headlights.
Speaking of the latter, the second-generation LED Matrix beam headlights provide more light than those on its predecessors, on top of giving off a hint of turquoise for a distinctive flair. Meanwhile, the static cornering light has a crystal-like design, while the LED strip underneath it serves as a position light, daytime running light and the indicator. Optional LED rear lights, with animated indicators featuring a Coming/Leaving home function, will also be available on the Superb Estate.
The body of the Estate has been fine-tuned, and contains specific aerodynamic tweaks which reduce the vehicle's drag coefficient by 15% over its predecessor. This brings the Superb Estate's overall drag coefficient to 0.25 Cd, giving it the title of Skoda's most aerodynamic Estate car to date.
Modifications done to the estate which have helped to achieve these figures include a more streamlined roofline, a more steeply raked windscreen, an elongated roof spoiler with side inlets, and redesigned exterior mirrors. These tweaks work hand in hand with aerodynamically refined wheels and the new front bumper, which contains air curtains.
The vehicle is also fitted with an electrically operated active shutter located behind the central front. The shutter regulates airflow, keeping the engine at an ideal temperature.
Staying true to the roomy nature of Skoda's cars, the Superb Estate has an increased luggage capacity of 30-litres compared to its predecessor. Beyond the luggage capacity, there is also an increase of headroom in the interior. Overall, the Superb Estate has grown 40mm in length and 5mm in height.
In line with the brand's growing push to achieve carbon neutrality, all the textiles in the cabin contain recycled materials. The Superb Estate is also available in three interior trim levels, each coming with different Design Selections (or Skoda-speak for the sort of upholstery used in each car).
The SE Technology trim includes the Loft Design Selection with optional Lounge. The mid-tier SE L trim, on the other hand, offers Design Selections Suite Black and Suite Cognac. Lastly, the L&K trim comes with Suite Black and Suite Cognac Design Selections, while also featuring specific details like embroidered L&K lettering.
Up front, the interior of the Superb Estate is also dominated by the newly designed centre console, which has been given an enhanced sense of space by moving the selector lever to the steering column. For the SE Technology trim and above, wireless charging comes as a standard.
For controlling various functions within the cabin - including temperature, and seat heating and ventilation - the Estate is also equipped with physical 'Skoda Smart Dials'. These rotary dials have a textured surface in Unique Dark Chrome, and boast haptic and digital elements. Namely, each Smart Dial is accompanied by a 32mm digital display, in which activated functions can be seen.
Interestingly, the centre Smart Dial will be customisable, and boasts the ability to control up to four preset functions. Users will able to select these four functions from a total menu of six, including infotainment volume, fan speed, air direction, smart air conditioning, driving modes and map zoom.
For the first time in the model's history, occupants will also find a 13-inch free-standing unit for their central infotainment display. Skoda says that it has fitted a handrest in the vehicle to accompany this, making it easier and more comfortable to use the touchscreen. In tandem, a 10-inch 'Virtual Cockpit' driver's display comes as standard, while Selection trim levels (and above) are offered with an optional head-up display.
As for what awaits under the bonnet, the new Superb is available in six different powertrains with outputs ranging from 148bhp to 261bhp.
In line with its larger electric push, Skoda has made sure to highlight the plug-in hybrid variant of the Superb Estate - the iV - which now relies on a second-generation drivetrain. This particular variant sees a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine combining with an electric motor for a joint system output of 201bhp, with power transmitted via a six-speed DSG transmission.
Also noteworthy is that the battery capacity of the Superb Estate iV has risen to 25.7kWh (gross), which is twice as much as on the predecessor model. This increases the vehicle's all-electric range by about 38km, to more than 99km on the WLTP cycle.
The iV's battery can also be charged from 10 to 80% in around 2.5 hours, with a maximum charging rate of up to 11kW via an AC outlet. On the other hand, DC charging is also supported at a maximum charging rate of up to 50kW.
Beyond the Superb Estate iV, three petrol engines and two diesels are available, all of which are mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission. To ensure good range, all engines will also come with a 66-litre fuel tank.
The entry-level 1.5 TSI petrol engine is the first (and only) in the model series to feature mild-hybrid technology, with a closed system consisting of a 48-volt belt-driven starter-generator and a 48-volt lithium-ion battery. As with other mild hybrids we've seen from the firm, energy recovered during braking supports the combustion engine with an electric boost, or allows the vehicle to coast with the engine completely switched off.
Additionally, Skoda's ACT+ active cylinder deactivation system allows for two cylinders to be switched off when their power is not needed, reducing fuel consumption.
Coming to the most powerful variants, the range-topping 190bhp diesel variant and 261bhp petrol variant will boast all-wheel-drive as a standard, which helps distribute power between the front and rear axles and between individual wheels. Up to 100% of the drive torque can be directed to the rear axle, with as much as 85% going to a single wheel.
As teased earlier by the brand in January, the new Superb Estate (and Superb) will soon integrate ChatGPT software into its infotainment system, expanding the functionality of the digital voice assistant, Laura.
With this addition, Laura will be able to do more than control the vehicle’s infotainment, navigation and air conditioning systems, but go further to answer general knowledge questions. Impressively (or eerily, depending on how you look at it), Laura will even continue to evolve, and be able to answer more complex questions with the progressive use of AI. Still Skoda says that to ensure maximum data protection, all interactions will subsequently be deleted.
Finally, a whopping maximum of 28 Simply Clever features will be available - as we've come to love - on the Superb Estate. Some of these features include longtime favourites such as the parking ticket clip, and new features such as an electrically operated load cover in its boot.
