The R-Space measures 4250mm long, slightly shorter than the current Scenic, which is 4344mm long. The R-Space features expressive exterior styling and a futuristic interior, with its floating dashboard and unique seats, reminiscent of the DeZir concept car.
"We provided a strong visual and functional contrast between the driver environment, where the focus is on driving pleasure, and a surprising and highly-original rear section conceived as a play space for children," said interior designer Alexandre Gommier.
The most unique feature of the R-Space is the rear seats, which comprises of twenty-seven miniature motors which power height-adjustable cubes that can take different shapes. Possibilities include an all-flat surface for load carrying, a bench for three passengers, a table or a random configuration that children could create themselves, but only when the vehicle is parked.
The R-Space concept also previews Renault's new range of fuel-efficient turbocharged petrol engines, with the Geneva show car having a 900cc three-cylinder petrol unit with turbocharging and direct-injection, along with a double-clutch EDC transmission. This particular engine produces 110bhp and 160Nm of torque, and is the first in Renault's new range of modular TCe engines, called Energy TCe, which will be launched in 2012.
Renault claims that the R-Space is able to go from 0-100km/h in 11 seconds, and reach a top speed of 200km/h. Also, with its intelligent DRIVINGECO² system, which automatically adapts engine response in relation to the various parameters influencing energy consumption, Renault says that the R-Space is capable of returning a fuel consumption figure of 3.7 litres per 100km, and provide low emissions figures.
