Torrential rain fell on various parts of Singapore yesterday afternoon, uprooting trees and causing flash floods and traffic accidents.
National water agency PUB said the largest amount of rainfall was recorded at Handy Road, near The Cathay, with 95.4mm collected between 2.10pm and 4:00pm. 49.4mm of rain fell during the peak period between 2.30pm and 3:00pm.
PUB added that flash floods were reported at Mackenzie Road near Little India, Kramat Lane behind Concorde Hotel along Orchard Road and Bassein Road near Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Novena.
The water agency said that it is in the midst of improving flood protection in three areas, namely Mackenzie Road, Bassein Road and Orchard Road. Drainage on Orchard Road will be improved when the Stamford Detention Tank and Stamford Diversion Canal are completed by 2016 and 2017 respectively.
The Land Transport Authority said fallen tree branches were reported on Tampines Expressway (TPE) at four points, and on the Central Expressway at one point. It also posted 18 tweets between 12:00pm and 5:00pm to notify the public of accidents on expressways and major roads.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at 12.40pm to a fallen tree at Jalan Kuras in Upper Thomson, where three people were extricated after a tree fell on their Mazda car.
