Beginning today (1 April 2024), the Traffic Police (TP) will activate speed enforcement functions in Red Light Cameras (RLCs) islandwide. These will be done at locations that are accident- or violation prone.
TP had already preempted that it will be doing so in an earlier press release published in February this year, to buck the worrying trend of increasing traffic accidents and related casualties.
In 2023, the number of speeding-related fatal accidents increased by 83.3% compared to 2022, and the proportion of fatal accidents due to speeding increased to 25.2% from 17.3% in 2022. It adds that while there was a decrease in violations detected by traffic enforcement cameras, from 73,152 cases in 2022 to 52,237 cases in 2023, the number of speeding violations detected by Police enforcement operations increased from 52,016 cases in 2022 to 63,468 cases in 2023.
The Police said this shows that despite the effectiveness of traffic enforcement cameras in deterring speeding violations, motorists still "choose to speed at locations where they think no one is watching".
RLCs are prominently displayed in orange and white. They are accompanied by warning signs placed before the RLCs stating "Traffic Police Camera Zone", with a sign that indicates the speed limit of that road above it.
Motorists can find the list of RLC locations on the Singapore Police Force (SPF) website.
TP urges motorists not to speed, even in areas where there are no static cameras. It encourages motorists to exercise graciousness and patience, drive with care, and abide by traffic rules.
"TP will take enforcement action against errant motorists who choose to flout traffic rules, including speeding," it adds.
