Four Mazda MX-5s travel across the U.K. powered by biofuel

Mazda has taken four examples of the MX-5 (one of each generation of the car) through a 1,600km journey across the U.K. from Land's End to John O' Groats to mark the car's 35th anniversary. And the entire journey was powered by 100% biofuel from sustainable fuel firm Coryton that distributes the 'Sustain' line of biofuels in the U.K.
The journey made stops at a total of four organisations, which include Motor Spirit, a distributor of Sustain Classic, the U.K.'s first publicly available sustainable petrol, designed specifically for classic vehicles, and described by Mazda as a centre of excellence for classic motoring and aviation.
Each Mazda MX-5 made the journey powered by Sustain 100 RON E5, a second-generation biofuel that contains zero fossil fuel and is manufactured from agricultural waste and by-products from crops which can’t be used for consumption
The convoy also visited the Translational Energy Research Centre at Sheffield University - a world-leading pilot-scale research centre which is working with industry to test and develop green energy solutions for a de-carbonised future.
Also visited was the Windermere Boat Club - the oldest powerboat racing club in the world which is still active - that delivered the first-ever sustainable handicap powerboat racing event in the U.K. powered by Sustain fuels.
The cars also stopped by Celtic Renewables, described as a pioneering technology-led producer of green chemicals contributing to the sustainability of manufacturing and industrial processes.
While the 100% biofuel is not available for customers in the U.K., Mazda states the drive and locations visited demonstrate the role sustainable fuels can play in de-carbonising both modern and classic cars and highlights how sustainable fuels could complement Mazda's Multi-Solution approach to achieving climate neutrality.
Since June 2023, the Mazda U.K. Heritage Fleet has been fuelled by the Sustain Classic 80 sustainable fuel, which is commercially available to the public in the country. The Mazda MX-5 was the first-ever vehicle to drive 1,600km across the U.K. and lap a circuit in each home nation powered by sustainable fuel in 2022.
