BMW is set to replace its tri-turbo diesel engines with a quad-turbo unit

At the Vienna Motor Symposium, BMW has unveiled its latest quad-turbo six-cylinder diesel engine. The current tri-turbo N57S engine's dual-stage turbocharging setup consists of one low-pressure turbocharger to take care of low-end torque, and two high-pressure turbos for the higher rev range. In the new B57 engine, the big turbo is now replaced with two smaller units on a common exhaust, to benefit from lower costs and smaller unit weight.
The new powerplant makes 394bhp and a maximum torque of 761Nm. The engine is expected to deliver better response and massive torque from low rpms, while fuel consumption will be improved by five percent. According to BMW, the engine is capable of producing even more torque, but 761Nm is all the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission can handle.
The new B57 engine will replace the current tri-turbo diesel in some of the high-end BMW models, such as the 750d xDrive. Other BMW models - like the X5 M50d and X6 M50d - are also expected to inherit this new unit in the near future.
