2019 Frankfurt Motor Show is anything but boring

True to its slogan 'Driving tomorrow', this year's Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) showcases the very latest developments in the world of mobility. With over 800 exhibitors on site - consisting of carmakers, suppliers, innovative mobility service providers, high-tech companies and start-ups from all over the world - the IAA is anything but boring.
Consisting of the next generation of coupes, iconic SUVs, eye-catching concepts and super sports cars, here are some of the highlights at this year's IAA.
Audi AI:Trail quattro
Measuring over four metres long and over two metres wide, while sporting enormous 22-inch wheels with 850mm tyres, the Audi AI:Trail's potential as an off-road vehicle is immediately apparent. The concept car even has an impressive ground clearance of 340mm, which will allow it to wade through more than half a meter deep of water.
More than just an off-roader, the AI:Trail is designed for automated driving - not just on the roads, but off the beaten tracks as well. On road, the Audi concept is capable of up to Level 4 of aunomous driving, the second-highest level on a standardised international scale for increasing automation. Off-road, depending on the circumstances, the vehicle is capable of automation level 2.
BMW 4 Series Concept
At the heart of the front is its larger-than-life kidney grille, a design that has been at the forefront of the BMW X7 and the BMW 7 Series flagship sedan.
While details of the Concept 4 wasn't released, we can expect the car to share the same underpinnings of the BMW 3 Series, with similar engine lineup. This would include a turbocharged 2.0-litre in-line four as well as a juicier turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six cylinder - both of which would be married to a a ZF-sourced eight-speed automated transmission.
Alongside the Concept 4 was the BMW Vision M NEXT, a plug-in hybrid concept with an output of 591bhp.
Lamborghini Sian
Equipped with a 774bhp-rated V12 powerplant and a 48V motor that delivers 34bhp, the Lamborghini Sian develops a total output of 807 Italian horses. Through the use of lightweight materials, the Sian's power-to-weight ratio is also better than that of the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.
This allows the supercar to finish the century sprint in less than 2.8 seconds.
Design wise, the new Sian takes inspiration from the Countach, and continues to sport its classic Gandini line.
Land Rover Defender
Unlike the funky-looking Suzuki Jimny, another sweet off-roader, the Land Rover Defender offers up more space.
The Defender 110 offers five, six or 5+2 seating configurations, with a cargo space behind the second row of seats of up to 1,075 litres, and as much as 2,380 litres when the second row is folded.
At launch, the petrol lineup comprises a four-cylinder P300 and a powerful six-cylinder P400 featuring efficient mild hybrid technology. The short wheelbase Defender 90 is expected to join the lineup sometime in 2020.
Mercedes-Benz GLB
It does, however, appear more luxurious than most off-roaders we've seen. Its cabin, for instance, comes with the widescreen cockpit, with control and display via Mercedes-Benz User Experience.
The Mercedes-Benz GLB will come with two four-cylinder petrol engines.
The GLB200 will be powered by a turbocharged 1.3-litre that puts out 158bhp and 250Nm of torque. The GLB250, on the other hand, will come with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that's good for 218bhp and 350Nm.
Porsche Taycan
The first models to be relased in the new series are the Turbo and the Turbo S variants. The latter version of the Taycan can generate up to 740bhp of power in combination with Launch Control and overboost, while the Taycan Turbo can produce up to 661bhp. This allows the Taycan Turbo S to smash the century sprint in 2.6 seconds, and the Turbo variant in three seconds.
The Taycan is also the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800V. Under ideal conditions, this allows a charging time from five to 80% battery capacity in just 22.5 minutes, with a maximum charging power of up to 270kW.
Skoda Kamiq
With a boot space of 400 litres, which increases to 1,395 litres when the rear seats are folded down, the car offers plenty of space for the family. Apart from space, the Kamiq also excels with its modern features.
Its free-standing screen, for example, is ideally positioned in the driver's field of view and is the biggest in its segment at 9.2 inches. Also one of the largest displays in the segment is the 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit.
The car comes with either a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 113bhp and 200Nm or a 1.5-litre powerplant that churns out 148bhp and 250Nm of torque.
Volkswagen ID. 3
Making its world premiere as a production-ready vehicle in Frankfurt, the Volkswagen ID.3 is immediately identifiable as a zero emission vehicle - with the potential of becoming a new automotive icon. Like all future ID. models, this car is also based on the new MEB platform.
At series production launch, the ID.3 will be available with three battery sizes. The base model has a usable energy content of 45kWh and enables a decent range of up to 330km. There is also a battery variant with 58kWh, which enables the ID.3 to achieve a range of up to 420km, while the capacity of the largest battery on offer is 77kWh, which translates to an electric range of up to 550km.
Through fast charging via an output of 100kW, it is possible to charge the ID.3 to a range of around 290km within 30 minutes. At launch, the ID.3 1st special edition model is based on the mid-range battery variant.
