Audi A8 3.0 TFSI quattro Tip LWB (A) Review

Just a couple of weeks ago, we reviewed the stunning looking Kia Optima K5 and boy, did that car make a memorable impression. It simply has the looks to make your pupils dilate. It has been far too long since a car manufacturer has created a car that sends a positive vibe down our spinal cords. And as you would expect, the image of that car hasn't left our minds since.
That's the supremacy of having good looks.
This brings me to Audi's flagship model. Created to appeal to wealthy consumers looking for maximum luxury and space, the Audi A8 is a charming full-size luxury sedan. It offers a near-perfect blend of luxury, performance, amenities and style, and has just become one of our favourite full-size luxury sedans.
When it drove in to our shores end of last year, Audi provided a well-needed update for the next decade, allowing us to have a spin in the car. Unfortunately, we only had the car for a couple of days and had to develop notions about it rather hastily. But one thing is for sure - the A8 made a great first impression.
Exterior
On first glance, the new A8 retains the classic Audi look, with its long silhouette and large framed grille. It's almost a little too conservative, with a styling that embodies an upsized A4. Nonetheless, the revolutionary daytime running lights plus horizontal chrome linings in the massive frontal grille give the car an unmistakeable face. And that helps the luxury sedan stand out from the crowd.

Thanks to the LED daytime running lights, the A8 can be seen from miles away. The eyebrows are aggressive and mean and they make the car seem like a predator ready to pounce on its next prey, differentiating itself from the rest of the models in its stable.
Measuring at over 5.2 metres in length, the Audi A8 is long, dwarfing even the Jaguar XJ by a bit. But despite its size, the Audi A8 is neither flashy nor bulging like the BMW 7-Series, but instead has a sleek and understated look, with a slim side profile.
Round the back, the car has a very familiar look, with the engine displacement and car model being the only difference between it and an A4.
But it's no bad thing, mind you. The Audi A8 is one elegant and charming looking man that separates itself from the boys. The styling may be typical Audi design DNA, but there is now a certain edginess to the sheet metal.

Interior
The cabin of the A8 is a sumptuous place to be seated in, feeling almost like the ultimate office on wheels. It offers a unique combination of bold architecture, elegant surfaces and top-quality materials like none other. There simply isn't a surface that doesn't feel expensive to the touch.
But the A8 isn't just about looks. The technology integrated with it makes it a grand sweep of tailored perfection, enabling the driver and the machine to become one. The countless threads of gadgets that are incorporated with the car don't threaten the driver like how some cars do.
Additionally, in conjunction with Audi's Multimedia Interface (MMI) navigation, it has a touchpad which enables the driver to key in the destination by tracing the letter on the pad - with your finger.

And as long as we're talking about comfort and space, the thick electric seats, both front and rear, give ample support to the back. And once you get seated in the rear bench, you'll start to realise why bosses prefer being chauffeured in an A8. Head and legroom are more than adequate while the seats cocoon you with a reassuring approach. You can almost see yourself having a glass of champagne at the rear seats while being driven to your destination.
Audi prides itself on superb build quality and creativity and this generation of A8 pushes those standards even higher. The gear lever you see here features a wholly new design inspired by the world of sailing. And because it resembles a golf putter and is bigger than usual, it also serves as an ergonomic hand rest.

The Drive
On the go, the 3.0-litre V6 powerplant proves to be somewhat quicker than its stated performance figures. Despite its weight of nearly 1.9 tonnes, the luxurious sedan somehow doesn't feel as big and heavy as it is. Down the accelerator pedal and the A8 glides down the stretch of road, hitting the century mark in a mere 6.2 seconds.
Its ride and handling characteristics are also bound to impress the driver. At low speeds, steering is alarmingly light, but once up to speed the steering firms up appropriately. Moreover, this charming chap provides a ride comfort that is cushion-like and it's neither sluggish nor revolting over bumps.
Although this car is best enjoyed in the rear bench, we prefer landing our butts in the driver's seat - with the Drive Select System toggled to Dynamic mode. There is a significant sharper steering and throttle response and well-controlled body roll through bends while remaining its agility.
The grip is strong and the car remains planted and secure through all manner of turns. The Audi A8 is far sportier than you would expect and is undeniably satisfying to pilot.

Saying that, regardless of driving mode, the eight-speed tiptronic gearbox delivers stern performance in a rapid yet seamless incremental manner, so much so that the paddle shifters may be deemed redundant for the driver.
Conclusion
Comparing the A8 to some of its competitors, it may not be the most desirable luxury sedan. But the German marque is certainly closer to being one with its latest model.
It's the kind of car that somehow suits not the typical 'towkays' with gold bracelets and necklaces but the CEOs and Managing Directors who prefer modest styling and subtle sophistication.
Having a right balance of luxury, style and driveability is a tough job and it's what most carmakers have yet to achieve. But with this car, the credit goes to Audi's engineers and designers.
A glass of Dom Perignon champagne, anyone?
