Volkswagen unveils 'Design Vision GTI' in Austria

One of the highlights at the annual Worthersee festival is a concept car that's conceived especially for the meeting by Volkswagen engineers and designers, and this year is no different with the striking 'Design Vision GTI' which is based on the seventh generation GTI.

All this power is delivered to the tarmac via a DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system to complete the benchmark century sprint in an impressive 3.9 seconds.
Braking capabilities are provided by large carbon-ceramic brake discs, sized 15-inches up front and 14-inches at the back. The ceramic brake discs and red-painted callipers peek through the spokes of the 20-inch alloy wheels derived from the 'Austin' GTI design, that feature integrated blades to ventilate the braking system.
Like the Audi R8, the distinctive C-pillar on the concept, is drawn outward while the main part of the body narrows strongly towards the rear starting from right behind the front wheel with a vertical air outlet.
The GTI concept's front end is similarly sculptural. The radiator grille, the bottom air inlet, and the brake cooling vents are combined with the headlights and framed by the front fenders and the hood. The precision and straightforwardness of the lines follow the Volkswagen design DNA.
The interior follows a 'stripped-down' design - employing as few switches as necessary, like the steering wheel, which is equipped with ergonomically optimised paddle shifters.
The interior layout is even more driver focused with tauter surfaces and harder edges. The race car impression is reinforced by the partial use of carbon fibre, which is combined with 'Anthracite' and 'Titan Black' Alcantara on top of 'Black' and 'Flash Red' Nappa leather. One remarkable detail is a red loop for a door handle - reminiscent of Porsche Cup cars. The rear seats have been replaced an X-shaped cross member that strengthens the body.

The 'Design Vision GTI' is capable of producing 503bhp and 559Nm of torque from the turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TSI with two three-way catalytic converters are arranged close to the engine to optimise emissions behaviour.
