BMW has unveiled the specifications for its new BMW X5 M50i and the BMW X7 M50i, delivering supreme presence and performance for the two top models in the BMW X family.
The new cars will get a new eight-cylinder petrol engine, sporting BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for a maximum output of 530bhp. Both models combine the V8 engine with intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system and model-specific suspension technology, developed with expertise from BMW M GmbH.
The new 4.4-litre drive unit will deliver an impressive level of performance. Components have been upgraded from the previous version, including the crankcase, cylinder barrels, pistons, crankshaft and cylinder heads - as well as the freshly updated BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The turbochargers positioned between the cylinder banks of the V have also been enlarged, while the direct petrol injection performs at a new maximum pressure level of 350 bar.
The engine will generate its maximum torque of 750Nm at 1800rpm and up to 4600rpm, while power output is rated at 530bhp at 6000 rpm. As a result, the new BMW X5 M50i is able to accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds. The new BMW X7 M50i completes the same sprint in 4.7 seconds. Drivers will be able to choose between sporty or comfort-oriented driving modes.
The cars will come as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission, delivering dynamic gear shift properties. Shift paddles mounted near the steering wheel provide for manual control of the choice of gear.
The latest version of the BMW xDrive system distributes engine torque between the front and rear wheels in a manner that enables it to adapt quickly to changing road conditions. The intelligent all-wheel drive system increases the agility and traction of the new BMW X5 M50i and BMW X7 M50i and enhances driving stability in all weather and road conditions.
The new BMW X5 M50i and BMW X7 M50i will also come with a M sports differential as standard. The electronically controlled differential lock in the rear bevel gears limits the rotational speed between the wheel on the innermost side of a bend and that on the outermost side and enables highly dynamic acceleration when exiting a bend. Dynamic Stability Control, will optimise traction and power transmission when driving on loose terrain, preventing wheel spin due to insufficient grip, by redirecting torque to the other wheel.
The suspension tuning of the new BMW X5 M50i and BMW X7 M50i has been painstakingly worked to extract maximum potential by BMW M GmbH. Both models employ a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle.
The new BMW X5 M50i is also equipped with Adaptive M suspension, while the BMW X7 M50i is fitted with adaptive dual axle air suspension, which is also available as an option for the BMW X5 M50i.
The interior of the two top models of the BMW X family will feature an M leather steering wheel, a gear selector lever displaying the M logo, Vernasca leather upholstery with contrast stitching and perforated surfaces and interior strips in Aluminium Tetragon or Fineline Black precious wood finish with high-gloss metallic effect. Ensuring a luxurious feel with a sporty touch. Illuminated entry sills display the 'M50i' logo, and a headliner in Anthracite or Alcantara Anthracite comes with the BMW X7 M50i. The BMW X7 M50i will also feature a Harman Kardon surround sound system as standard.
