If you think the Porsche Studio was built only for car enthusiasts or fans of the brand, you might want to think again. On Saturday (20 April 2024), the studio launched its inaugural speaker series - for the curious from all walks of life - after opening its doors to customers earlier in January.
Titled 'Journey to a Cleaner World', the first session in the series focused on - well, you may have guessed it by now - sustainability, in celebration of Earth Day. This forms part of a broader series themed 'Driving Tomorrow' where Porsche Singapore brings together "creative trailblazers and entrepreneurs with a pioneering spirit to drive conversations of tomorrow".
Did you know that cars are responsible for 15% of our carbon emissions? The shipping and aviation industry contribute approximately 10%, while trains are the least - standing at only 1% to 2%.
These were just some of the interesting knowledge bites that came up during the sustainability bingo game that attendees got to participate in.
And of course, you can't miss out on a good discussion about electric vehicles (EVs) when you put a car brand and sustainability together. Particularly so for a brand that has the Taycan - an all-electric sports car - in its lineup.
These conversations were led by invited speakers including, Mr. Dean Cher, Head Mobility, Sustainable Energy Solutions, SP Group; Dr. Tan Wei Ming, owner of a Porsche Taycan in Singapore; and Ms. Kong Man Jing, co-founder of the Science and Environment-themed YouTube Channel "Just Keep Thinking".
Attendees heard directly from the experts on the EV landscape in Singapore and what it would take to nudge more to convert. Many were surprised to learn that only 1.8% of our local vehicle population today has been electrified. Even so, the healthy ratio of EVs to chargers locally tells us that we are on the right track.
An important point was raised on educating the public on the difference between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) so people can make informed choices. This, for instance, could affect how one would plan their day out at a mall.
If the EV chargers at the mall are fast chargers, spending long hours at the mall may not be ideal because one might incur idle fees from leaving their fully charged EV plugged in.
The session attendees, which drew like-minded individuals from across the automotive, food waste, and sustainability sectors, engaged meaningfully in the discussions. That explained the insightful conversations exchanged over topics relating to the adequacy of charging points at each carpark, portable chargers for EVs as opposed to fixed ones, as well as the relatively pricier insurance premiums tagged to EVs.
If you're keen to participate, keep a lookout for what else is in store because Porsche Singapore has said that these sessions will be run on a monthly basis.
In the meantime, don't hesitate to drop by the Porsche Studio for a casual visit. It is open daily from 10:00am to 8:00pm at Guoco Midtown, 130 Beach Road, #01-12, Singapore 189774.
