Mercedes-Benz has announced that the E63 is the latest AMG model to bid farewell to V8 power. The first '63' AMG model to eschew the V8 engine is the latest C63, which now features a turbocharged 2.0-litre in-line four with a plug-in hybrid system.
But before the W/S 213 model series ceases using the M177 eight-cylinder, AMG is sending it off with the E63 S 4Matic+ Final Edition, which will be limited to just 999 units. Of this number, only five will officially be allocated to Singapore. That's less than one percent of total production.
Befitting its status, the model is fitted with numerous unique features as standard. Exterior-wise, the E63 S Final Edition is finished in matte graphite grey magno paintwork, is fitted with 20-inch forged AMG wheels, and comes with an AMG high-performance compound brake system with red brake callipers.
Adding to the car's sporty character is the AMG Night Package, which sees components such as the front splitter, side sill panels, wing mirror housings, and trim strip above the rear apron finished in high-gloss black. When the doors are open, the puddle lights project the AMG logo.
Inside, potential buyers will find the steering wheel finished in a combination of Nappa leather and Dinamica, and High-End Performance Seats. Upholstered in Nappa, the latter offers multiple adjustments to suit various body types, and more importantly, has ventilation, too.
Other interior goodies include the 'AMG Final Edition' badge that designates the car as '1 of 999', and black brushed stainless steel door sill trims with yellow 'AMG' lettering that illuminate when the doors are opened.
The cockpit blends luxury and sportiness, with Nappa leather upholstery, carbon fibre trimmings, and yellow contrast stitching
At the heart of the E63 S 4Matic+ Final Edition is the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 capable of 603bhp and 850Nm of torque, with the latter figure available between 2,500rpm and 4,500rpm.
These figures are transmitted to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox, configured with shortened shift times and a 'Race Start' function. The 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system on the other hand, enables fully variable torque distribution between both front and rear axle to optimise traction as needed.
Equipped with such systems, the E63 S Final Edition can crush the century sprint in 3.4 seconds. With enough unrestricted road, the sedan tops out at 300km/h.
Naturally, the car comes with several configurable drive settings that enable the driver to tailor the performance to his or her preferences. 'Drift Mode' is also offered, should the driver wish to have a bit of fun (and bring forward the tyre replacement date).
With regard to handling, the E63 S Final Edition is fitted with AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with variable damping, and electronic limited-slip differential on the rear axle, and active engine mounts.
The car's performance and limited-edition status is reflected in its asking price. At time of writing, the E63 S Final Edition is retailing for $912,488 with COE.
