As supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive and Richard Mille enter their fifth year of partnership, the RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon McLaren Speedtail - their latest and most ambitious collaboration to date - has been officially announced. The remarkable and unique timepiece honours the fastest and most advanced vehicle McLaren has yet produced - the futuristic looking Speedtail.
The Speedtail is based on the form of a teardrop, the most aerodynamically efficient shape found in nature. The three-seat hyper grand tourer became the third car in McLaren's Ultimate lineup.

McLaren's relentless pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency served as the starting point for the design of the RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon McLaren Speedtail.
It took Richard Mille's casing department an unprecedented 2,800 hours over 18 months to perfect the design lines.
Like the Speedtail on which its based, the watch’s lines mimic the form of a water droplet while the bezel indentations evoke the vehicle’s distinctive bonnet openings.
The strap features a unique asymmetrical design. The rubber version is manufactured using Vulculor technology, a special process that enables coloured rubber to be over-moulded, allowing the iconic McLaren orange accent coloured stripe seen at the six o'clock position to extend down to the wrist.
The entirely new movement architecture demanded an astounding 8,600 hours of development, much of which went into finalising the extreme level of detail.
The complexity of the components, the multitude of details and, above all, the attention applied to the finishes, place the RM 40-01 firmly at the peak of Swiss-made watches. The rims, for example, are buff-polished and the bevelling is hand-polished.
To reflect the 106 McLaren Speedtails manufactured, 106 RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon McLaren Speedtail watches are planned for production.
