Maserati unveils diesel powered Quattroporte at Frankfurt

In the Quattroporte Diesel lies a 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine which delivers 275bhp. A second version for the Italian market puts out 250bhp with 600Nm of torque. This allows the Quattroporte to ascend to a top speed of 250km/h (240km/h for the 250bhp version) after catapulting to 100km/h in only 6.4 seconds (6.8 seconds for the 250bhp version).

The engine is also fitted with a variable geometry turbocharger with ball bearings for minimum friction and turbo lag, on top of a steel exhaust manifold with Air Gap technology, for higher exhaust temperatures and higher energy gas flow. These advanced technologies enable the engine to produce a high specific power output.
The oil burning Quattroporte also features Start/Stop technology, which Maserati believes can improve fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by six percent. Maserati affirms that the Quattroporte diesel will retain its distinctive engine sound, courtesy of a new Active Sound system where two acoustic actuators installed near the exhaust pipes will emphasise the distinctive sound of the engine.
According to the Italian firm, the audio note complements the vehicle dynamics, being loud but discrete from low engine revs and will fully satisfy its occupants during progression. In Sport mode, the sound is modified together with other vehicle set ups to further improve vehicle sporty dynamics and becomes louder, wider and clearly sportive. The result is, for both car occupants and outside listeners, a harmonic and vigorous sound, typically recognised worldwide as 'The Maserati Sound'.
Debuting alongside the diesel powered Quattroporte is a concept car signed by Italian fashion label Ermenegildo Zegna. The Zegna version will feature an exclusive colour scheme, special mirror polished rims on tone and prestigious interiors upholstered in fabrics made by the famous Italian fashion house.

Maserati's engineers have developed a sophisticated common rail direct injection fuel system and incorporated short dwell time injectors. The multiple sequential injections permitted by the new system mean better performance, quicker response and cleaner emissions.
