As our local Hyundai smart urban mobility hub prepares to open its doors to the public, the firm is continuing to push for an increased production capacity of electric vehicles back in South Korea, having held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new electric vehicle plant at its complex in Ulsan.
The new plant is set to reach an annual capacity of 200,000 electric vehicles per year, following a $2 billion (KRW $2 trillion) investment, and full-scale construction of the site is set to begin late in 2024. Hyundai expects the new plant to be completed in 2025, while mass production is set to commence early 2026. The first model to be built at the site will be an electric SUV from Genesis.
The new electric vehicle-dedicated facility will also be Hyundai Motor's first new plant in Korea in 29 years.
Hyundai interestingly, states that the new site will apply the same manufacturing platform that was developed for the innovation centre here in Singapore. This new platform will see the new site utilising AI-based intelligent control systems as well as eco-friendly, low-carbon construction methods to achieve carbon neutrality.
The manufacturing platform will also be paired with a smart logistics system that will allow it to manufacture different vehicle models, in response to market changes. Also set to feature at the new plant is a nature-friendly design, that is said to reduce worker fatigue and encourage interaction.
Hyundai also states that the new site will maximise the use of natural light, bringing the warmth of the sun indoors. The site will additionally feature a group lounge as well as a central park, both of which can be used by site workers to as a rest and natural gathering area.
