Four engines will be available for the i40 sedan in Europe, two petrols and two diesels, all of which are Euro V emissions compliant. Hyundai expects the most popular engine to be the 1.7-litre diesel with 136bhp, while the other diesel option is a 1.7-litre diesel that produces 115bhp, and comes with Blue Drive technology that includes a start/stop system, low rolling-resistance tires and an alternator management system.
For the petrol engines, there is a 1.6-litre unit which produces 135bhp, and a new 2.0-litre engine with direction injection, called “Nu”. The four-cylinder powerplant produces 177bhp and 213Nm of torque, and, when mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, allows the i40 sedan to go from 0-100km/h in 9.7 seconds.
The i40 is packed with features such as a smart-parking assist and lane departure warning systems, as well as Bluetooth with voice recognition, navigation system and rear view camera. There are also ventilated and heated front seats, heated steering wheel, electric parking brake and an auto-defog system.
The new i40 sedan will go on sale across Europe by the last quarter of 2011, and will be offered with five years of unlimited warranty, roadside assistance and vehicle health checks. Hyundai expects to sell about 60,000 units a year, with the company aiming for a 3 per cent market share in Europe by the end of 2011.

The i40 is the European market replacement for the Sonata, and the car bears a similar look to its smaller sibling, the Elantra. However, the i40 sedan measures in at 4740mm long, 380mm more than the Elantra, and Hyundai claims that the i40 offers best-in-class room for front head, shoulder and leg. The Korean carmaker also says that the i40 will provide passengers with "the most comfortable ride available in the D-segment".
