Ford sold 29,804 vehicles in India during the first quarter of 2011, which represented a 97 per cent rise over the same period in 2010, when it sold 15,154 vehicles from January to March. Ford sold 10,485 cars in March alone, the second time in the past three months that it has breached the 10,000 sales mark, and the strong sales meant that Ford has now sold more than 100,000 cars in India over a single financial year, from April 2010 to March 2011, a rare achievement in India.
"We are delighted to see our sales figures reaching 10,000 plus twice in the last three months - in January as well as in March 2011 - making this our best-selling financial year ever. The production of 100,000 vehicles in a single financial year has placed us right at the forefront among leading manufacturers in India," said Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India.
A major factor in Ford's strong increase in sales is the Indian market-only Ford Figo, which was launched last year and is based on the previous generation Ford Fiesta. The Figo has already amassed 85,000 sales in India, and Ford has begun to export the car to South Africa, Nepal and Mexico in view of the car's success. Ford is also planning to introduce the new Fiesta into the Indian market to further boost its sales for 2011.
