Ferrari has revealed the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider, the first road-legal cars from its XX programme.
Both cars are based on the Ferrari SF90, and retain its 4.0-litre plug-in hybrid drivetrain. However, the power output of the V8 engine has been raised to 786bhp (a 30bhp increase), thanks to the use of polished inlet and exhaust ducts, as well as a raised compression ratio thanks to the adoption of new pistons and specific machining of the combustion chamber.
Ferrari additionally states that the hot tube system that transmits the combustion pulsations into the cabin has been redesigned in the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider so occupants are treated to even edgier, more raucous harmonics from the engine.
This engine will continue to work with three electric motors, the first located between the engine and the gearbox, and the next two located on the front axle, which combined deliver a total of 229bhp. Both cars also retain the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox of the SF90, although this gearbox has been upgraded with the gear-shift logic of the Ferrari Daytona SP3 to deliver more engaging acceleration.
On the exterior, the cars now get a redesigned nose that now comes with a redesigned front wing, redesigned head lights, and new vents. The rear of the car also gets new vents and a wider diffuser, while the tail volume, which has been specifically redesigned with aero in mind, is now sleeker, giving the cars a long tail silhouette typical of racing cars.
But the highlight here is a new fixed rear wing, a solution not seen on a street legal Ferrari since the F50. These changes, Ferrari states, give the new cars double the maximum downforce of the SF90 Stradale.
The SF90 XX Spider additionally gets a top made from carbon fibre. This retractable hard top can be opened while the car is moving in a mere 14 seconds and at a speed of up to 45km/h.
Further aiding handling here is the ABS EVO controller from the 296 GTB, which allows the cars to deliver improved performance and repeatability in high performance braking in dry conditions. Select the 'Qualifying' mode via the eManettino, and the cars can also deliver extra power at the critical moment when the car is exiting a bend.
In the cabin, both cars will get racing seats with a visible carbon fibre tubular structure and cushion supports designed to enhance driving pleasure without compromising on comfort. Integration of the backrest rake mechanism here into the seat itself allows the seats to look like a single-piece item, and this seat is said to save 1.3kg compared to the single-piece seat in the SF90.
Only 799 examples of the SF90 XX Stradale and 599 examples of the SF90 XX Spider are to be built.
