BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, U.S.A has opened a new state-of-the-art press shop ahead of the launch of the new X3. The new press shop will produce the exterior body sides, doors, side panels and tailgate of the new premium compact SUV.
The new press shop comes equipped with cutting-edge servo technology, which enables the BMW Group to produce large quantities very efficiently. The line is said to be capable of running up to 18 strokes per minute, which means more than 10,000 components can be produced each day, depending on the size of the component.

BMW Plant Spartanburg has further established a closed-loop material cycle for scrap metal from the press shop. Underneath both the press and coil lines are areas that collect the scrap metal gathered after the parts are stamped. The firm states that up to 60 tons of scrap are currently accumulated each day and taken off-site to be recycled and reused to manufacture new steel and aluminium coils.
BMW states that from now until 2030, Plant Spartanburg will see the production of at least six all-electric models. The high voltage batteries for these cars come from nearby Woodruff where the BMW Group is currently setting up an assembly for sixth-generation batteries.
BMW Plant Spartanburg has built more than 1.7 million examples of the BMW X3 since the model was introduced back in 2010, and is celebrating 30 years of production this 2024, after having assembled close to 6.7 million BMWs.
