The BMW Group has broken ground on a new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, South Carolina, U.S.A. Named Plant Woodruff, the facility will produce sixth-generation batteries to supply fully electric vehicles at nearby BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg.
The new sixth generation battery will utilise a format that will increase energy density by more than 20% and improve charging speed and range by up to 30%. At the same time, CO2 emissions from cell production will be reduced by up to 60% through the partial use of secondary lithium, cobalt, and nickel material, as well as renewable energy for production.
Plant Woodruff, when operational, will run without fossil fuels and will use 100% green electricity. The site’s structure has also been designed to be 'solar ready', able to support the installation of a rooftop solar photovoltaic system in the future.
Plant Spartanburg, meanwhile, is expected to build at least six fully electric BMWs by 2030. BMW announced in October 2022 that it would be investing $2.3billion (USD$1.7 billion) in its U.S.A operations, which includes an investment into Plant Spartanburg for the production of fully electric vehicles as well as to build a new high-voltage battery assembly plant.
