BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroen already collaborate on producing four-cylinder petrol engines, but now the two carmakers have come together in a 50-50 joint venture called BMW Peugeot Citroen Electrification, which will focus on developing hybrid components for future hybrid vehicles. With the collaboration, both companies expect to shave significant costs in the development of hybrid parts.
Among the components to be produced by the new joint venture include battery packs, E-machines, generators, power electronics and chargers, and the necessary software to operate them. The new parts will be used by both automakers in their own hybrid vehicles, and could even be sold on to other carmakers. The collaboration is expected to start by the second quarter of this year, and the first products are set to arrive by 2014.
"This cooperative venture will enable us to achieve significant economies of scale in the field of electrification. It also represents an important step on the road to sustainable mobility", said Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
"With this joint venture, we are sure to develop and expand our expertise and to build a European leader in the field of automotive hybrid innovation", noted Philippe Varin, Chairman of the Managing Board of PSA Peugeot Citroën.
