Peugeot 107 1.0 5DR (A) Review

When I first saw the 107, I was half-expecting the cutesy car to pounce onto me with its great big tongue hanging outta the gaping intake. Relentlessly slobbering all over my face while its rear wiper's going side to side like a jovial puppy dog's.
Yeah, that's how cute it is. My friend sealed my impression of it when she saw it and shrieked "SO CUTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!" (I'm not kidding. That's literally how she sounded!). OOoookay…it's confirmed. The 107 is definitely a chick car. Funky colours, petite dimensions, a 'happy' adorable face and a shrieking fan, this is definitely definitely a chick car.
The 107 takes the torch from the previous 106 which sold 398,000 during its production from 1991 to 2003. The new car was designed and developed in partnership with Citroen and Toyota. Thus the car is actually a Toyota Aygo as well as a Citroen C1 depending on which badge you prefer. That's not a bad lineage to be associated with considering that Toyota's been one of the most reliable brands around until recently.
Exterior
The 107 is a very compact little car with its length at only 3430mm. The width too is conservative at 1630mm. From its looks, it's obvious the car is being targeted at the younger crowd.

Specifically, the female crowd. Peugeot expects more than 50% of its owners to be female drivers. Personally, I think the percentage of female owners will probably be much more than that.
The 107's stumpy front fascia is dominated by its large air intake that's divided by a chrome splitter. Mounted on both extremes are a pair of slightly bulging headlamps that combined with the intake, gives the car a very happy and friendly expression. This happy expression leads to gently sloping A-pillars that carry the curve all the way over the roof towards the abrupt rear. In the rear, the large rear windscreen cum tailgate compliments the taillights mounted high up to complete the city car look. Lower down the grey plastic bumper also contributes to that look.

On the five door model, the rear windows annoyingly opens only slightly to allow the minimum amount of fresh air into the car. It puzzles me why the designers at Peugeot went with these pop out windows instead of the conventional downward rolling type. There is however a three door version which would give sense to these pop out windows. Unfortunately, the three door version isn't available locally.
The little Pug rolls on tiny 14 inch wheels that drives home the city car look further while also contributing significantly to its impressive mileage.
Interior
Enter the Pug interior and you will immediately be washed with the psychedelic colours and funky design. The front seats in the little Pug are comfortable though quite annoyingly, the seats can't be lowered. Making the driving position a little higher than I'm accustomed to. Adjusting the lean of the seats too can be difficult with the wheel which makes switching drivers rather inconvenient. Despite my misgivings about the seat adjustment, the seat itself is quite comfortable after you finally get it adjusted the way you like it.
The steering wheel is only rake adjustable which makes finding the perfect driving position nigh impossible. Beyond the steering wheel, you find the uniquely designed instrument cluster. The speedometer and rev counter are separate entities in this setup. The rev counter is mounted in a separate pod on the right. Information like fuel quantity, gear mode and trip meter are displayed on the LCD screen that's mounted within the speedometer pod. Peugeot scores points for this interesting design concept.

The centre console is dominated with lots of curves with a little cubby hole stashed at the top of it. Buttons on the audio system are easily within the driver's reach and each button is large enough for you to avoid stabbing the wrong buttons.
The factory fitted audio system is rather plain looking compared to other competitively priced Japanese models. Performance too is basic even though it comes with an AUX-in jack. The audio system is also capable of playing your MP3 CDs and normal audio CDs.
Just below the big red hazard button is the uniquely designed but rather cheap-looking aircon console. I think Peugeot might've messed up when they reached this point. The plastics used on the aircon console look as if they were stripped out of a child's $5 toy. Granted the aircon console looks quite chic at night with the amber light glowing through the plastic. During the day however, it remains an eyesore in an otherwise well-designed interior.
In the rear, things aren't too shabby. Sitting two full-grown adults in the rear shouldn't be a problem and complaints about leg space should be unexpected. Despite my long frame, I'm quite comfortable in the rear without any onset of claustrophobia.
The boot is a little disappointing though it's not unexpected in a petite city car like this. More often than not, you will have to call on the split folding seats to action.
On a whole, the interior is unique in its class for being hip and funky. Though the generous use of tacky plastics might put some off.

The Drive
Peugeot offers the 107 with only one engine. The three-cylinder 998cc unit which produces 68 whinnying horses. Yes, loud and whinnying horses. When stressed, the engine tends to be quite loud but the noise does tone itself down once you're cruising on the expressways. The ride on the highway is quite decent for a small car though it tends to transmit some undulations through the cabin on the smaller roads.
Thankfully, despite the Toyota running gear, there was no throttle sticking to the floorboard. Around town, the handling of the 107 is quite nippy. Though I would much prefer a manual gearshift compared to the indecisive auto I tested. It never seems to find itself in the right gear only shifting when the revs are almost at maximum.
The trade off of having a smaller engine is the mileage it gets. And in the 107, it gets lots. At 21.7km/L, the 107 trumps even the Chevrolet Spark's 17.5km/L by quite a margin. This gives the 107 an estimated range of 735km on its 35 litre tank. 735! Now that's impressive and I'm sure it's something even the guys will appreciate.

Conclusion
We can't escape the fact that the 107's styling leans more on the effeminate side but its safety and the incredible mileage more than makes up for those looks. Earning a four star Euro NCAP rating in a little car like this is impressive. On top of that, the Cornering Stability Control (CSC) is quite a nifty piece of kit where the rear wheels would toe out to provide greater stability during fast corners.
But for Peugeot to appeal to the male clientele, I believe they should consider shipping in the manual variants as I presume that most guys would prefer swopping cogs themselves. At least, I would.
