MG4 is best choice of rear wheel drive, handling and value money

Review

Driving experience:

It was great experience after the test drive and I like the handling with rear wheel drive and the suspension setting in comfort tuning, it is fun to drive and wont feel pressure to drive in cornering road, It has a low center of gravity, balanced weight distribution, and communicative steering. The build quality of the car is super solid of the chassis. The driving mode need to manually configure without any memory setting and I like to use the One pedal mode. It need to turn on the moment you get into car.

Charging :

The DC charging also quicker than other model.

Software:

The software is not the latest technologies as compare with other brand like Omoda and BYD with 540° camera system. The 360° of MG4 does not mean can work, it also working fine.

Interior Cabin space:

The wheelbase of this car is 2705mm which bigger than other hatchback size and rear seat with enough legroom. It make your drive more comfort with rear multilink suspension. No sunroof like other brand car, don't think is suitable for Singapore weather. Painful of paying extra money for tinted the sunroof glass and paying more the insurance coverage.

Boot space:

Boot space with 398mm, need more can remove the tonear cover and can bend down the rear seat with 1177mm space. It is enough for small family.

MG Pilot :

The function almost same like other brand and can be served through steering wheel left button either Traffic jammed assist and ACC. It also bundle system with Lane keep assist, automatic emegency braking system, rear cross alert, blind spot detection without irritating sound. Let you drive more carefully on the road.

Best Value-for-Money Driver's Car!

Exterior

- In the era of EV slick designs, it is not the most modern looking but it is eye catching. Some cars are fast to impress but look dated after few months. This is the opposite.

- It looks small but not small at all! I parked beside a golf, and the golf looks like minicar.

- The volcano orange is really special under the sunlight!

Interior

- Nothing like the usual opulent offerings from many chinese EVs now.

- Minimalism, unclattered, surprisingly spacious and airy. Its wheelbase is as long as bmw X1!

- Everything is functional and simple without it being too much "Into your face".

- The doors close with a convincing solid thud, better than some contis.

- At this price tag, some cost saving measures/materials are inevitable like no rear central arm rest, cup holders etc.

- There is no rear aircon vent but the aircon is super effective! Airflow is strong when tuned up.

- "Hi MG" Command is pretty good. Tried adjusting fan speed with it while driving and it works beautiful everytime!

Drive

- This is main selling point of the car!

- Hard to find a car with RWD, minimal body roll on negotiating a turn yet ride comfortably over bumps. I am really surprised!

- To get such drive/ride in a RWD conti ICE, it would set one back at min 230k.

- It does has its quirkiness - its lane keeping assist is a tad too assisting to the point of hindering rather than assist driving. SW updates can probably improve it in future. One could switch off or to just alert. But it is stupidly reset after powering down.

- It offers other usual useful safety features such as cross traffic assist, rear car collison alert, blind spot detector, 360° cam etc.

- The range states 450km. I could easily hit that and more.

- Insulation is good too! Quiet ride.

Sales

- Special mention to EK MG sale guy, Derek.

- Very responsive right up till delivery.

Conclusion

- This is NOT the best car but the prefect one in this price/value bracket

- Google the overseas' rave reviews for more info.

- Some would say spend a bit more to get e.G. Model 3 (cat A RWD too). True in terms of fun gadgets stuff like sophisticated sentry mode and sunroof etc. However it is a whopping ~40k +/- (as of jul 2024)

- If you are looking for a good drive, decently priced Cat A RWD EV to start an EV journey, this could be it. (Psss....On paper, this car outruns Cat A Model 3 and Cat B ICE 318i by 0.1s)

Generally happy with the car - everything looks and feel decent for the price point that I paid for.

Particularly enjoy the handling of the car - if you haven't tried it I do suggest to test drive to understand what I mean.

However, there are also caveats to the car and some major room for improvements that I suggest the distributor look into for long term customer satisfaction (details below).

I was at MG Leng Kee yesterday for the low profile father day promotion. My first choice was MG ZS SUV but when I look at the MG4 premium trophy hatchback , I changed my mind after test drive.

The MG 4 EV may not move any technological boundaries, but other manufacturers should undoubtedly see this car as a serious threat, because it does so many things so well, and for such a keen price that it is hard to argue you should buy any other electric hatchback.

Which in some ways sums up the MG4. It's a terrific addition to the cat A entry-level of the electric car market, albeit with a skinny equipment list in its most basic form. But at least there's some spark and zing to the way it gets around especially the one pedal drive is an option, this mode is a turn off that most though not all drivers hate.

Considering the cat A low price of the MG4 EV, the car doesn't skimp on everyday accoutrements either, with an excellent range of driver aids adding to the practical appeal. The rated range for city drive is a decent 510km while combined city and highway is 420km, you take just 35 minutes to juice up the battery. A careful driver can easily hit 400 km, enough for a week or more.

There's nothing wrong with the ZS EV, but the MG4 has made a leap of several generations in terms of technology and appeal (driver and otherwise).

In terms of value and ability for the money, this is one of the best EVs on sale. More importantly, it puts a smile on your face in so many ways.

All in all, the MG4 is a fantastic EV. Sure, the infotainment touchscreen isn't state of the art and it's a tad slow to power up especially most of the functions are controlled by the infotainment, the worse is the air con settings that must access from the infotainment.

The steering wheel controls are also fiddly. But this car is rear wheels drive that power up the acceleration while the front wheels help to manoeuvre the steering.

Still, rear visibility isn't ideal unless you remove the headrest and the boot could be bigger, but overall it's a fabulous car at a great price.

It is still an affordable , distinctive, well equipped and practical hatchback , the MG4 delivers the kind of driving dynamics that's streets ahead of many European made in China EVs twice the price.

Car is great, but…

Review

The MG 4 EV ticked all my boxes and I made the plunge and got it in Jan 2024. Two months and 3500km later, here's my thoughts:

Drive: excellent. Speeds up and takes the turns like a champ. Only downside- pretty bumpy even when regen is turned down to its lowest setting.

Wind noise was also quite significant, but not so bad at you'd hear if you had music on.

Interior: I'm a simply man with simple tastes. Keep it simple, keep it tidy, keep it black. This car does all that . Nothing ugly and jarring and the boot space is sufficient for the occasional airport drop offs.

Infotainment system and the app:

The former is laggy, and the latter sucks. Buttons take time to register , or multiple taps, and connection on the app is sporadic.

Butttt.. It all does work though. I consider this car a daily meditation on the merits of patience.

Value for money: well I'm one of those lucky ones who nabbed it at a 65k COE, and before prices went up higher, so my stance on this is gonna be different from owners that come later. Except…

Now for the badder bits- MG Eurokars

My SA: top marks, great guy. Look for Derek he's a champ

Management: REFUSED to speak to me when I wanted to discuss something. REFUSED. Never had that before and I was more bemused than angry.

Service centre: Well, it's a new car so so far I don't have THAT much to follow up on. But the rear tailgate has been a persistent issue, they can't seem to get it working right for me.

But to end off this review I'll go back to the "Except…" And explain that: except, the earlier Cat B buyers of this car.

Yes it previously came in CAT B when COEs were sky high last year and MG freaked out and then downtuned the specs so the car could creep back in at Cat A. I've spoke to some fellow Cat B drivers and they're quite hard done by: they literally paid ALOT more but get quite a lot less.

No rear windscreen wiper and smaller wheels for their version, and more importantly, no app access.

Now of course we can just laugh and say "Lan lan" To the poor sods who paid close to 200k for this car and found its relative value crash in about 6 months, but I've got some sympathy with them when it comes to the app. Apps matter for EVs so at least you know when your car is done charging. How hard is it to allocate bandwidth for these cars to get on the app?

So the TD;LR review? The car is great, but MG Eurokars … not so much?
