The full-electric Rolls-Royce Spectre debuts in Singapore
22 Aug 2023|8,546 views
The idea of an electric-powered car started as a vision that Charles Stewart Rolls, the co-founder of Rolls-Royce, had in 1900. Today, on 22 August, Rolls-Royce showcased its first-ever full-electric production model, the Spectre, at Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Singapore on its Southeast Asia debut.
The Spectre is not only the first full-electric Rolls-Royce, but it also signifies the start of the marque's road to the full electrification of its portfolio by the end of 2030. With its electric powertrain, the Spectre embodies the Rolls-Royce experience of instant torque, silent running, and the sense of one imperceptible gear, and takes it a step further.
Powered by two Separately Excited Synchronous Motors, the Spectre puts out a total of 577bhp and 900Nm of torque. This spectacular amount of power means the sub 2.9-tonne luxury coupe is able to complete the century sprint in just 4.5 seconds. Equipped with a 102kWh battery, the Spectre has a WLTP range of 530km. It will also charge from 10-80% in just 34 minutes using a 195kW DC fast charger.
The Spectre is built upon Rolls-Royce's Architecture of Luxury platform, which is an all-aluminium spaceframe that was the basis for the Cullinan and Ghost. In this iteration, the introduction of a fully-electric powertrain, and its 'Decentralised Intelligence' system that enables thousands of individual vehicle functions to work together, marks the start of a new era of Rolls-Royce cars.
The use of sophisticated extruded aluminium sections and integration of the battery into the structure has resulted in a spaceframe that is 30% stiffer than in any previous Rolls-Royce, and it has also resulted in a highly beneficial secondary function - the battery also acts as 700kg of additional acoustic insulation.
To achieve Rolls-Royce's signature ride quality, the Spectre is equipped with an evolution of the Planar System originally launched in the Ghost. This suspension system combines specially developed hardware and the Spectre's high-speed processing capabilities to deliver the marque's 'magic carpet ride'.
On straight roads, the anti-roll bars will be decoupled to reduce high-frequency disturbance by smaller, repeated surface defects. And when the system detects a corner, it recouples the components and stiffens the damper, and prepares to activate the four-wheel steering system to ensure effortless entry and exit. Individual sensors also monitor almost 20 different parameters and adjust them automatically to maintain perfect tracking and stability while cornering.
The Spectre's interior has been packed with technologically advanced features - for the first time in a series production Rolls-Royce, the Spectre can be equipped with Starlight Doors, which incorporate 4,796 softly illuminated 'stars'. As with all Rolls-Royce cars, the Spectre's interior suite offers clients near-infinite Bespoke possibilities.
On the outside, the Spectre's design is instantly recognisable and yet, features touches unique to it. Up front is the widest Pantheon grille ever fitted to a Rolls-Royce, and it is also softly Illuminated with 22 LEDs to create a subtle three-dimensional signature at night. Flanking the grille are a pair of split head lights that pay homage to the Spectre's spiritual predecessor, the Phantom Coupe.
The Spirit of Ecstasy has also been meticulously redesigned for the Spectre, perfected over 830 hours of design modelling and wind-tunnel testing, and it contributes to the low drag coefficient of the Spectre to make it the most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce ever built.
The sharp vertical bow line starts from the front and leads to the seamless roofline, then to the Spectre's fastback, which is inspired by both classic cars and racing yachts. At the rear are a pair of colourless rear lamps for neutrality in anticipation of the bespoke exterior colour commissions.
Marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and the start of its all-electric era, the Spectre represents a promise made and a prophecy kept - right from the moment in 1900 when Charles Rolls prophesised the electric future for the motor car.
The price of the new Rolls-Royce Spectre starts from $2,138,888 (without COE).
