Shell converts three stations to run on green power

Those who really want to take their transport-related carbon footprint down here in Singapore now have the option to charge up their electric cars with renewable energy with Shell.
The firm has converted three of its stations at Lakeview, Tampines, and Pasir Ris to run on clean power, thanks to solar panels on their rooftops that not only power the energy demands of the station itself, but also the electric vehicle chargers located within.
These three Shell service stations will also offer the fastest electric vehicle charging speeds available at service stations in Singapore. The Lakeview station, for example, currently offers charging at up to 180kW, which Shells states, should see most electric vehicle charging sessions completed within 15 minutes.
Assisting this raised energy demand at the three stations is a battery energy storage system, the result of an innovation grant awarded to Singapore renewable energy solutions company Eigen Energy in March 2021 by the Singapore Energy Market Authority and Shell, with support from Enterprise Singapore.
This battery storage system is connected to a smart energy management system that will monitor the station's current electrical demand, alongside the available energy collected from the solar panels and the demand for electric vehicle charging. The energy management system then utilises this information to decide how much energy should be drawn from the on-site storage system, or from the national grid.
If the stations do draw energy from the national grid, the energy consumed will see the retirement of an equivalent volume of Renewable Energy Certificates. Shell states that it has a total of 37 stations here in Singapore equipped with solar photovoltaic systems, in addition to the solar system installed at its lubricant plant in Tuas. These solar photovoltaic systems will generate enough Renewable Energy Certificates to ensure that all customers at the three stations will be charging with 100% certified renewable energy.
The use of a battery energy storage system not only ensures that power for the stations is sustainable, but also helps to alleviate the load placed on our national grid from the high-speed charging of electric vehicles.
Shell Lakeview is located at 80 Thomson Road, Singapore 574326. 180kW charging is offered at this station at a rate of $0.71/kWh as of 8 August 2023. Shell Tampines, meanwhile, is located at 9 Tampines Avenue 2, Singapore 529731, and Shell Pasir Ris is located at 1 New Loyang Link, Singapore 506931.
Shell Tampines and Shell Pasir Ris will offer 180kW green energy starting from 31 August and 30 September 2023 respectively.
