BYD launches the Seal with an exhilarating drive experience

BYD Singapore invited the media to Changi Exhibition Centre (CEC) in the morning of 29 September 2023 for the local debut of the much-awaited BYD Seal electric sedan.
The brand did not invite everyone to travel to the extreme end of Singapore just for a conventional introduction of its latest addition to its lineup here. The venue was cherry-picked for a hands-on demonstration of the prowess of BYD's latest high-performance electric sedan.
At CEC, the media were invited for a first-hand experience of the three variants of the BYD Seal that are sold in Singapore - the single-motor Dynamic, single-motor Premium and the Performance variant, which has dual motors, sending power to all four wheels.
The new cars were put through their paces at two courses - the Handling Course (mini circuit demarcated with cones) and the Slalom, Acceleration and Braking Course. Under the guidance of experienced driving instructors, these courses are designed to let participants experience the engineering that went into the BYD Seal.
The courses demonstrated the stability of the BYD Seal, aided by the increase in chassis rigidity thanks to its in-house developed Cell-To-Body Technology, which integrates the Blade Battery seamlessly into the car's body to form a strong sandwich structure, achieving a torsional rigidity equivalent to high-end luxury cars.
It also showcased BYD's latest intelligent Torque Adaptation Control (iTAC) system. By intelligently allocating drive torque to the powered wheels, this advanced system minimises skidding while enhancing the handling of the car. The effect of this torque vectoring system can be felt as you accelerate out of a turn - the clever electronics work to combat understeer, resulting in a sharper response.
Of course, with the freedom to bury the accelerator in these closed courses, participants got to experience the full power of each variant - this includes the ludicrous 3.8 seconds century sprint that the dual-motor Performance variant is capable of.
On the performance front, the BYD Seal Dynamic, Premium and Performance variants' respective power output are 201bhp and 310Nm, 308bhp and 360Nm, and 523bhp and 530Nm. The Dynamic is equipped with a 61.44kWh battery while both the Premium and Peformance variants get the larger 82.56kWh battery - this results in the Premium having the longest WLTP range of 570km, while the Performance offers 520km and the Dynamic achieving a respectable 460km.
Equipped with double wishbone at the front and multi-link suspension at the rear, it is clear that the engineers at BYD valued the importance of handling performance during the conception of the Seal. And the performance of the cars at the launch event served to show that they have achieved what they set out to do.
Inside, the BYD Seal is well-equipped - there's a full panoramic glass roof, a large 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment display, power adjustable and ventilated front seats, a plush interior, along with a full suite of driving assist systems.
On the outside, the BYD Seal sports a sleek shape that results in an ultra-low drag coefficient of just 0.219cd. Its design reminds of various other sporty luxury cars - the front end reminds of a mix of the Porsche Taycan and Toyota Supra, while its silhouette is vaguely reminiscent of its competitor, the Tesla Model 3's. In all, the BYD Seal has a flowy and sporty design that will appeal to many.
At launch, the BYD Seal Dynamic, Premium and Performance are priced at $242,888, $252,888 and $284,888 (with Guaranteed COE) respectively.
