10 noteworthy production-ready cars at JMS 2025

Make no mistake: The notion of exploring the future of mobility may lie at the heart of the second official iteration Japan Mobility Show (JMS), what with the likes of a modular truck, a six-wheeled MPV and a personal mobile pod for children taking the spotlight.
Nonetheless, there were glimmers of the preceding Tokyo Motor Show - effectively what JMS was before - with the spread of gleaming new production-ready cars permeating the booths at Tokyo Big Sight. From an electric Kei car by BYD, to returning icons like the Mazda CX-5, Nissan Elgrand and Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, here are 10 production-ready cars worth a second glance at JMS 2025.
1. BMW Concept Speedtop
It may have the word 'Concept' in its name, but BMW's breathtaking Concept Speedtop has already been confirmed for production - albeit a highly limited run comprising only 70 units worldwide.
Proof that modern BMW design can be alluring without stirring controversy, the Concept Speedtop follows in the footsteps of the convertible Concept Skytop, but puts its own spin with a resplendent shooting brake body style. Power comes from the potent 4.4-litre V8 you’ll find in the current M8, which puts out a tasty 523bhp.
Given how limited the production run of the Concept Speedtop is, it's not a stretch to predict that most of these will wind up as garage queens - but we're still hoping we see one blitz past on the Autobahn, or bellowing loudly round a mountain pass in Europe someday.
2. BYD Racco
BYD has been known for its aggressive stance when penetrating markets, and it seems there won't be any exception for Japan. At the Show, BYD showcased its existing models, but the icing on the cake for the Chinese carmaker was the world premiere of its first electric Kei car, dubbed the BYD Racco.
According to BYD, the vehicle is based on Japanese Kei car regulations, which dictate the dimensions as well as engine displacement capacity for the sake of lower taxation and insurance fees.
From what we saw, the Racco features a boxy, space-efficient design to maximise cabin room due to its compact dimensions. This car will most likely utilise BYD's Blade battery technology.
3. Honda Super-ONE Prototype
Don't be fooled; Honda is calling this the Super-ONE Prototype, but it seems fully ready for production. It's already undergone "extensive testing on various road surfaces and under diverse climate conditions in Japan, the UK, and other countries across Asia to further enhance its driving performance".
Built atop of the lightweight platform of Honda's N Series models, the Super-ONE Prototype is a charming and neatly-designed vision of a compact performance electric hatch. Just look at those flared, squared-out fenders.
While no powertrain details have been confirmed so far, what has been confirmed is a multitude of tantalising features. There's a simulated seven-speed transmission, for example; ditto for an 'Active Sound Control system' to simulate the sonorous notes of a combustion engine. Yes - the Honda Prelude was also at Tokyo Big Sight... but our hearts lie unreservedly with this tiny (and super) one instead.
4. Mazda CX-5
For the first time in the world, Mazda displayed the all new Mazda CX-5 publicly since its unveiling in Europe in July this year. The new SUV at the show is equipped with a 2.5-litre powerplant that's good for 190bhp and 250Nm of torque. Output is send to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.
On the outside, the CX-5 has a more upright face with a new pair of headlamps and daytime running lights that act as a signal indicator as well.
Also new is the look of the rear as well as the cabin. The 'Mazda' moniker now replaces the brand's logo at the back as well as on the new steering wheel. There is also a spanking new large 15.6-inch infotainment screen taking centre stage.
The car is expected to come to Singapore in the third quarter of next year. We can expect the specifications of the CX-5 to be different from the show car.
5. Mitsubishi Delica Mini
While the mainstage at Mitsubishi's booth was occupied by the Elevance concept, we found ourselves inexplicably drawn towards the Delica Mini - a tall Kei car that promises maximum practicality with a small foot print.
The newly redesigned Delica Mini has semi-circular light elements, which gives the car an angry expression; however, its small stature does nothing to back up that aggression. In fact, we'd say it looks like a vehicular manifestation of an agitated Pomeranian: Angry but still irresistibly cute.
6. Facelifted Nissan Ariya
Nissan's global electric warrior, the Ariya, arguably doesn't share the same sort of badge cachet as some of the other storied names on this list. Still, we're highlighting its appearance here at Tokyo for one very special reason: It's the first time that we're seeing it in updated form.
Most notably, the Ariya winks even more explicitly at its electric identity with the removal of its previous shield-shaped front grille. In its place stands a front fascia with a heavier emphasis on the car's paintwork colour, as well as newly-shaped head lights that mimic those found on the all-new Nissan Leaf. The rear also appears to have been given a clearer light casing.
But the promised updates are more than skin-deep. With its update, Nissan is now promising vehicle-to-load functionality on the Ariya at last, a new Google-powered infotainment system (possibly Android Automotive OS?), and suspension upgrades for enhanced ride comfort.
7. Nissan Elgrand
After a 15-year long run, the Nissan Elgrand has finally been reintroduced. For those that aren't familiar with the model, the Elgrand is a large, luxurious MPV that competes in the same segment as the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire.
Those who remember Nissan's Hyper Tourer Concept that was displayed in 2023's Japan Mobility Show would probably find this car familiar - the Elgrand's design looks like a distilled version of the former, down to the duo-tone paintjob. Arguably most eye-catching now in its production-ready form is its front grille.
The Elgrand will be powered by the latest version of Nissan’s e-POWER hybrid system, offering improved efficiency and quietness, along with a luxurious interior, and equipped with a high-quality sound system for maximum enjoyment.
8. Nissan Micra
Nissan's beloved compact hatchback returns as a pure electric vehicle. Known for its easy-to-drive nature and cute, charming design, the past Micra (also known as the March) was a popular car in Singapore for young drivers in its heyday.
Offered with two battery sizes, the Micra manages a practical range of up to 408km. It sure seems to be a compelling EV option if it makes its way to our shores - can you resist its charms?
9. Toyota Land Cruiser FJ
Definitely one to keep an eye out for - Toyota's new Land Cruiser FJ redefines the Land Cruiser lineup with its compact size. With its design clearly inspired by past Land Cruisers and the FJ Cruiser, the Land Cruiser FJ sure is charming and attractive.
But it doesn't just ends at the looks department - built upon the Toyota IMV platform, the Land Cruiser FJ is a truly capable off-roader that adopts a traditional body-on-frame construction, which is well-suited for off-roading.
In fact, its wheel articulation is equivalent to the 70 Series Land Cruiser! Oh, for those feeling extra nostalgic, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be offered with optional round head lights in selected regions!
However, as of now, the Land Cruiser FJ isn't slated to arrive in Singapore - bummer!
10. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
On the other hand, here's a model that will make its way to Singapore really soon. In fact, we have reliable information that the new RAV4 Hybrid will be present at the 2026 Singapore Motor Show, so you'll be able to get up close to it in the near future.
The new RAV4 now sports Toyota's latest 'Hammerhead' styling, which is seen on models such as the Prius and Camry. Apart from exterior updates, the RAV4's powertrain has also been enhanced to offer improved performance. Meanwhile, the interior gets modern touches including a digital driver display, and an updated gear selector among others.
Also showcased at JMS is the GR Sport Prototype, which looks incredibly sporty thanks to its enhanced bodywork, including a front bumper reminiscent of the GR Yaris.
