Mercedes-AMG GT gets new 804bhp plug-in hybrid drivetrain

After revealing the SL63 S E Performance in December of 2023, Mercedes-AMG has now also bestowed its AMG GT with plug-in hybrid technology.
That's right. The Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance gets a total output of 804bhp, courtesy of the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8, paired with a 201bhp electric motor and a 6.1kWh battery - the same configuration that does duty in the plug-in hybrid Mercedes-AMG SL.
The system sends a total of 1,420Nm of torque to a nine-speed multi-clutch transmission, and AMG's 4Matic all-wheel drive system, allowing the performance coupe to complete the century sprint in just 2.8 seconds (0.1 seconds faster than the SL63 S E Performance).
For some comparison, that's more power than what is offered by the Porsche 911 Turbo S, the Ferrari Roma, or even the new Aston Martin Vantage, although it is behind on plug-in hybrid options such as the 986bhp Ferrari SF90 Stradale or the 1,001bhp Lamborghini Revuelto.
As with the plug-in hybrid SL, the host of visual changes that separate this plug-in hybrid AMG GT from its petrol-only cousin are relatively modest: You get a new charging flap at the rear of the car, of course, and the car's badging comes in red. This hybrid also rolls on 21-inch AMG five-spoke forged alloy wheels, although another four alloy wheel options in various designs and colour variants are available.
Under this sheet metal, Mercedes-AMG states that this AMG GT comes as standard with an aerodynamic element that sits under the car and automatically extends downwards by around 40mm once the vehicle exceeds 80km/h, creating a Venturi effect to reduce aerodynamic lift on the front axle.
Also aiding to keep all that performance under control is the firm's Active Ride Control adaptive damper system, complete with semi-active roll stabilisation. Also present as standard here is active rear-axle steering, which offer both increased agility and stability at speed.
And for stopping power, the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance gets the AMG ceramic composite brake system, which comes complete with bronze-coloured six-piston callipers gripping 420mm x 40mm carbon ceramic brake discs at the front, and single-piston floating callipers at the rear, which in turn grip 380mm x 32mm carbon ceramic brake discs.
Order books for the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance are set to open in Europe later in 2024.
