McLaren Artura Spider unveiled in Singapore

Supercars move quickly in more ways than one. Barely a month after it made its Asian debut in Yokohama, Japan, the McLaren Artura Spider is now being premiered in Singapore.
The Artura Spider is the roofless version of the Artura Coupe and is positioned as a high-performance plug-in hybrid. Built upon McLaren's Carbon Lightweight Architecture, the Artura Spider boasts a mass of 1,560kg, which is a mere 62kg heavier than the Artura.
McLaren's Carbon Lightweight Architecture is both light and stiff, so despite lacking a fixed roof, the structural integrity remains relatively high. That means more extensive reinforcements that would increase mass are unnecessary.
To further reduce weight, the roof is constructed from carbon fibre composites. The model seen here is fitted with the optional Electrochromic glass panel that lets the driver adjust the brightness of the cabin when the roof is closed. It takes 11 seconds to either open or close the roof, and it can be operated while the car is driven at up to 50km/h.
The Carbon Lightweight Architecture is also why the Artura Spider can be fitted with slim buttresses featuring sections finished in polycarbonate glaze to improve rearward visibility. These components also contain the rollover structure that helps protect occupants in a rollover.
Safety aside, these buttresses are also aerodynamically designed to channel air into the engine bay to help keep temperatures cool. And McLaren says that apart from the engine, engineers also ensured that the air also helps cool the roof while it is stowed, so occupants do not have a hot ceiling when it is closed.
The Artura Spider's cockpit is clearly driver-focussed, with knobs and buttons kept to a minimum. The toggles for adjusting the powertrain and suspension settings, for instance, are placed on either side of the instrument panel. Infotainment and connectivity are provided by the MIS II system that comes with two high-definition screens.
On the topic of powertrains, the Artura Spider is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 that's paired to an axial flux E-motor. Their combined output is 690bhp and 720Nm of torque, figures that enable the rear-wheel drive convertible to demolish the 0-100km/h sprint in three seconds.
The V6 in the Artura Spider has been upgraded to produce 20bhp more than the unit in the current Artura Coupe. However, McLaren says that MY2025 (model year 2025) Artura Coupes will also feature the upgraded motor.
The Artura Spider is capable of zero emissions performance, too. When the 7.4kWh lithium-ion battery is fully charged, the car has a top speed of 140km/h. However, at this level, achieving the claimed all-electric range of 33km is probably unlikely.
In terms of handling, the car's ProActive Damping Control has been improved as well, with response rates going up by 90%. Other enhancements include revised damper valving, and new brake cooling ducts for better thermal management and more consistent braking performance.
Prices for the Artura Spider start at $1,300,000 before options, COE and insurance. McLaren Singapore expects local customer deliveries to begin by the fourth quarter of 2024.
